AT&T Virtual Private Network Service Connects Pratt Industries Manufacturing Sites across the U.S.
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today that Pratt Industries USA Inc., a
leading, international paper and packaging company, will have AT&T
implement a networking solution to accommodate recent and future growth
in Pratt’s telecommunications needs. Under the
$2 million three-year contract, AT&T will upgrade Pratt’s
network services to a fully managed Internet Protocol Virtual Private
Network (IP VPN). Because IP is a standardized communications protocol,
Pratt will be able to consolidate communications among its diverse
manufacturing sites — including two mills that
use 100 percent recycled paper — in more than
22 states and easily implement new sites as the company continues its
mission to "harvest the urban forest.”
In addition, Pratt’s network services will use
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. MPLS will allow Pratt
to seamlessly mesh different types of legacy networking technologies,
such as ATM and Frame Relay, and enable communication among locations by
using different communications protocols at different sites. MPLS will
also enable the company to prioritize network traffic and will permit
Pratt to optimize bandwidth usage for business-critical applications.
The prioritization of network traffic by using MPLS has allowed
companies like Pratt to transition to Voice over IP, centrally host
business applications and provide crystal-clear video conferencing among
locations around the world.
"With our AT&T VPN services established, Pratt’s
telecommunications framework will enable growth in capabilities as we
continue to increase our use of virtual and digital technology for
managing information systems,” said Brian
McPheely, chief operating officer, Pratt Industries USA Inc.
The contracted solution will augment the Managed Internet Services (MIS)
currently provided by AT&T.
