DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
According to the Confederation of British Industry, the European Union is in pressing need of "radical surgery" if it is to compete economically on a global scale. In a damning verdict, CBI chief Sir Digby Jones said that while the US has accelerated and China and India are flourishing new forces, the EU is stagnant, with arcane ideologies hampering the region's progress. Or, as he puts it, "Brussels is marching valiantly towards 1970 and we have to have a modernized Europe." His proposals include working towards a more flexible labor market. What the EU having expanded to 25 nations, the need for this is becoming more urgent. A total of 23 million EU residents are unemployed. Speaking of the European Union's struggles, the British Office for National Statistics (ONS) said UK GDP growth last year was a mere 1.8% higher than in 2004 -- the slowest growth rate since 1992. It was also some distance short of Chancellor Gordon Brown's official forecast that called for 3% to 3.5% expansion and more in line with his revised estimate of 1.75% back in December. But with 0.4% growth during the third quarter, followed by a 0.6% fourth quarter expansion, it's clear why the growth is tepid. Even that small fourth quarter resurgence (the best quarterly performance in a year) wasn't enough to prevent the full-year figure dipping to its lowest level since 1992 and well below the 3.2% mark notched up in 2004.
