Leggett & Platt Chief Operating Officer Named to Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers

Today Leggett & Platt (NYSE: LEG) announced that Karl Glassman, its Chief Operating Officer, has been named to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Mr. Glassman’s nomination was approved by the NAM board on March 5, 2010.

Glassman joins over 200 industry leaders on the NAM board, including executives from Leggett & Platt peer companies such as Emerson, General Electric, Illinois Tool Works, HARSCO Corporation, and others.

The mission of the NAM is to be the voice for all manufacturing in the United States. Members of the board provide national and global perspectives on the impact of federal government action upon their companies’ ability to grow and compete in a global economy. In addition, NAM board directors contribute their leadership and expertise to the NAM’s policy development process.

In commenting on Karl Glassman’s appointment, David S. Haffner, Leggett’s President and CEO, said, "Leggett and the NAM share a common goal of protecting and promoting the interests of our industry in Washington. Karl’s leadership role on the NAM board will enable Leggett & Platt to have an even more active seat at the table as issues such as tax policy, international trade regulations, and manufacturing law are discussed with our elected officials.”

John Engler, president of the NAM added, "Karl Glassman is a strong addition to our Board of Directors. Leggett employs over 12,000 Americans in manufacturing jobs, and his operating experience with such a respected U.S. manufacturer is precisely the skill set we look for in board members. We look forward to his input and leadership.”

Leggett has long taken a proactive role in protecting the interests of the manufacturing industry. Recently, Leggett joined with several other U.S. manufacturers to form the Coalition for Enforcement of Antidumping and Countervailing Duty Orders and to provide compelling evidence to Members of Congress, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection about foreign companies dumping products in the U.S., with the goal of stronger enforcement of existing antidumping orders designed to maintain a level playing field for U.S. manufacturers and their workers.

Karl Glassman concluded, "The NAM speaks firmly and forcefully for U.S. manufacturers, and Board members play a central role in formulating NAM's official policy positions on legislative, regulatory, and other public policy concerns. As a NAM Board member, I look forward to adding Leggett's voice to the critically important public debate about the future of American manufacturing.”
