Reports: US Appeals Court Reverses Part Of Apple's $930 Mln Verdict Vs Samsung

(RTTNews) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday reversed part of the $930 million verdict of 2012 in favor of iPhone maker Apple, Inc (AAPL) in a case against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (SSNLF), saying Apple's trademark-related appearance could not be protected.

The allegations in the case were that Samsung's smart phones improperly used some of the patented features found in Apple's iPhones.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. vacated the jury's $382 million award for Samsung's dilution of Apple's trade dress, which is a term that refers the design and shape or configuration of a product.

However, the appeals court upheld the patent infringement violations found by the jury in a court in San Jose, California, as well as the damages awarded for those violations.

The appeals court has ordered the court in San Jose to reconsider the $382 million portion awarded for trade dress dilution. The balance of $548 million would now potentially have to be paid by Samsung to Apple.
