MySQL Beats Sybase and PostgreSQL in Neal Nelson Power Efficiency Test
In recent tests of both throughput and power efficiency, the MySQL
Database Management System delivered superior results when compared to
several other popular DBMS packages, including Sybase (NYSE: SY) and
PostgreSQL. For example, MySQL delivered 101 to 299 percent more
throughput and 107 to 328 percent better power efficiency when compared
to Sybase. These tests were run on an AMD (NYSE: AMD) Opteron based
server by the independent computer performance consulting firm Neal
Nelson & Associates.
The Nelson Database Power Efficiency Benchmark measures both throughput
and power efficiency for transaction processing workloads at a variety
of user load levels. It runs identical workloads on the same server
platform with different DBMS software packages to determine differences
in throughput and power consumption that are caused by the DBMS
software. To demonstrate that significant differences exist, and that
these differences can be measured by the new benchmark, Neal Nelson has
released preliminary test results for Sybase, MySQL, PostgreSQL and
DISAM96.
The Database Power Efficiency Benchmark is a client server benchmark
where World Wide Web transactions are processed against a server
configured with Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise
Server operating system, the Apache2 web server and various different
database management software packages. The benchmark subjects a server
to multiple user load levels, reports the throughput and power consumed
at each load level and provides meaningful comparisons of both
throughput and power efficiency.
Nelson's firm has a long history of computer consulting for some of the
world's largest computer users including the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, the
Internal Revenue Service, McDonalds, WalMart and Federal Express. Nelson
operates a benchmarking laboratory that is available to commercial and
government users for independent computer performance tests. The tests
described above were not financed or sponsored by any company or group.
