Marathon To Provide Biofuel at Louisville Terminal
FINDLAY, Ohio, and LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Marathon Oil Corporation and the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition jointly announced today that Marathon will be adding storage and distribution of biodiesel fuel at the company's Kramer's Lane Terminal located in Louisville, Ky. The Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition (KCFC), the Kentucky Soybean Board and National Clean Cities, Inc. collaborated with Marathon to attract grants that helped enable the installation of the blending infrastructure.
"This is the first biodiesel storage and distribution project in Kentucky and Marathon's second biodiesel fuel location," said Gary R. Heminger, executive vice president of Marathon Oil Corporation and president of the Company's refining, marketing and transportation operations. "Marathon has long been a blender of ethanol in our fuel and we are pleased to offer biodiesel as another renewable fuel. We truly appreciate the help of the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition, which coordinated efforts to secure the grant funds. Those funds made this project feasible."
The Kentucky Soybean Board, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and National Clean Cities, Inc. all provided funding toward the project. In February 2005, Kentucky unveiled its first energy strategy, which highlighted the use of biodiesel and assistance in market placement. Currently Kentucky produces two million gallons of biodiesel and new plants under construction will result in nearly 70 million gallons being produced by mid-2007.
"This project linked agriculture, transportation, economic development, and air quality in Kentucky. It is a partnership model that all states should follow," said Melissa Howell, Executive Director of the KCFC.
Biodiesel storage and distribution at the terminal is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2007.
"Infrastructure development is a top priority for the biodiesel industry," said Tom Verry, director of outreach and development for the National Biodiesel Board. "When terminals like this one offer biodiesel to distributors, it helps biodiesel become part of the mainstream."
