EMC Helps Consumers Manage Their Digital Lives

HOPKINTON, Mass., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation , the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced powerful new EMC(R) LifeLine(TM) OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Software specifically designed to help consumers and small office and home office (SOHO) users centralize all of their digital files safely and securely in one place and retrieve them from any networked device at any time.

The new software, developed by EMC for manufacturers of consumer-grade network attached storage (NAS) appliances, delivers extensive network-based storage, backup, protection, and management features for any digital files including business records, photos, music and video, along with powerful, industry standard media streaming capabilities.

Intel Corporation recently introduced the Intel(R) Entry Storage System SS4200-E that utilizes EMC Lifeline software. This system is designed to provide Intel's worldwide channel of resellers and system builders an easy to use and powerful storage solution targeted to small business, small office/home office and the digital home. Intel is showcasing the new system at the 2008 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show). The event, which takes place this week in Las Vegas, features the latest innovations in consumer technology.

Iomega Corporation, a worldwide leader in data storage for consumers and small businesses, also plans to utilize EMC LifeLine OEM Software with its multi-drive network storage products. "We look forward to partnering with EMC on a new line of Iomega-branded network storage products targeting our core consumer and small business markets," said Jonathan Huberman, CEO, Iomega Corporation. "We expect to launch these new innovative products with EMC's LifeLine software during the first half of this year."

EMC LifeLine software draws on EMC's technology expertise as the world's leading provider of information management solutions that are used by large corporations to store and protect much of the world's most critical information. Developed from the ground-up to power appliances that are easy to use and set up, EMC LifeLine software supports both Windows and Macintosh computers and a wide variety of hardware architectures. It provides manufacturers with built-in data protection capabilities including RAID (redundant array of independent disk) and the popular and award-winning EMC Retrospect(R) backup software, which protects more than 10 million PCs worldwide.

"SOHO business owners are as concerned about preventing data loss and managing their data as large corporations are, and EMC is the most trusted name in data protection and information management," said Joel Schwartz, Senior Vice President, EMC Storage Division. "Today's consumers are also looking for ways to store more digital information and protect it from loss. Families are not only creating and downloading more photos, videos, digital music files and games, but they are also sharing them across more devices than ever before. Protecting precious memories and keeping track of an ever growing number of files require the right technology and we've developed a simple, easy-to-use system that anyone can use."

EMC LifeLine software enables manufacturers to offer a feature-rich solution for consumers that can be utilized and managed through most browsers, as well as through game consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and PSP. With a built-in media server as well as support for Apple iTunes, photos, music and videos can be stored in a single location and accessed using any supported media player. Its no-touch picture transfer capabilities automatically transfer pictures from PTP-capable (PTP -- Picture Transfer Protocol) digital cameras to the storage appliance without the aid of a computer. To conserve power, EMC LifeLine software has a built-in disk drive spin-down function, which shuts down disk drives after a period of inactivity.

For small office and home office users, EMC LifeLine software delivers a wide range of NAS features that were previously only available on larger storage systems. These include advanced file sharing, data management, data protection and security capabilities. Its content indexing feature allows users to easily search inside the content of the files stored on the appliance using actual keywords rather than just file names. In addition, EMC LifeLine software includes a convenient print server, enabling one printer to be shared by all of the computers on the network.

In addition to English, EMC LifeLine software supports multiple simultaneous languages including: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Traditional and Simple Chinese. The software automatically detects language settings on a user's computer and displays the interface and help content in the matching language. This allows multiple users on the same network to access the same storage system, each in their own language, at the same time.
