Comcast Launches PBS HD On Demand
Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced that for the first time ever, PBS’ high-definition (HD) programming is now available On Demand to Comcast digital cable subscribers across the country. The company also announced that its signature On Demand service has marked 11 billion views – a major milestone for the television industry.
"With 11 billion views behind us, it's clear that On Demand forever changed television, giving consumers unprecedented control with the convenience to watch what they want on their own schedule,” said Derek Harrar, General Manager and Senior Vice President of Video Services for Comcast. "Highly acclaimed programming from PBS is one more example of family-friendly content on our On Demand service that just looks great in HD.”

PBS HD On Demand
PBS HD On Demand will bring PBS series to viewers in vivid HD with the ability to play, pause, rewind and fast forward their favorite shows whenever they want to watch them. PBS HD On Demand will include:
- ANTIQUES ROADSHOW – a treasure hunt across America that captures tales of family heirlooms, yard sale bargains and long-lost items salvaged from attics and basements, while experts reveal the fascinating truths about the finds;
- NOVA – the most watched science documentary series on public television showing the human story behind science. Whether exploring a galaxy or an atom, the series delves into the personalities responsible for scientific advancement and the social consequences of their discoveries;
- MASTERPIECE – the longest-running primetime drama in American television, providing literature-based dramas, mysteries filled with eclectic characters and groundbreaking contemporary works;
- HISTORY DETECTIVES – a series devoted to exploring the complexities of historical mysteries, searching out the facts and myths that connect local folklore, family history and interesting objects; and
- FRONTLINE – flagship public affairs series, featuring incisive documentaries that explore and illuminate issues of the day.
PBS HD programs, including new episodes of shows available the day after they air, can be found On Demand under "HD On Demand” under "History and Nature.” Content choices will be updated each week. Viewers will access PBS content through a co-branded menu button recognizing a local PBS station in each market.
Programming for April features:
- AMERICAN EXPERIENCE "We Shall Remain,” a groundbreaking miniseries that establishes Native history as an essential part of American history narrated by Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order, The Cleaner);
- MASTERPIECE "Little Doritt,” a sumptuous production of Charles Dickens’ greatest love story starring Matthew Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley);
- FRONTLINE "Black Money,” an examination of corporate bribery;
- NOVA "Car of the Future,” Tom and Ray Magliozzi (NPR’s Car Talk) fame take viewers on a roller-coaster ride into the world energy efficient car technology; and
- NOVA "Last Extinction,” an investigation of a provocative new theory about what killed off America’s mammoths at the end of the last Ice Age.
Comcast Celebrates 11 Billion Views
PBS HD joins the popular On Demand program library that offers thousands of kids and family entertainment choices among its more than 10,000 programs available each month, including more than 1,000 choices in HD available at any time. On Demand gives customers access to an unprecedented HD collection currently including U2 music videos and concerts, movies like the worldwide phenomenon Twilight the same day it was available on DVD, along with entire seasons of popular shows like Friday Night Lights and The Tudors, and now PBS classics like NOVA and Antiques Roadshow.
Additionally, with one click of the remote Comcast customers have instantaneous access to more than 10,000 On Demand choices each month and currently:
- use On Demand more than 300 million times every month; and
- watch 149 million hours of content every month.
