Adobe Premiere Pro Drives New Generation of Filmmaking with IFC Films

Adobe Premiere Pro Drives New Generation of Filmmaking with IFC Films 'Dust to Glory'; New Digital Intermediate Workflow Enabled Producers to Deliver HD Theatrical Release

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2005--Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that Adobe(R) Premiere(R) Pro and Adobe After Effects(R) software was extensively used in the production of the ground-breaking HD (high definition) feature length film, Dust to Glory. The film utilizes a revolutionary digital intermediate workflow which allowed the producers to conform, master and finish in HD without leaving the desktop. Dust to Glory has been picked up for distribution by IFC Films and is scheduled for theatrical release in April 2005.
Directed by Dana Brown (Step into Liquid), the film captures the famed Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race covering 1000 miles across the baja of Mexico. To follow several stories as the race unfolded, a large film crew was spread out across the rugged desert terrain. This created a huge format challenge -- requiring integration of mixed media from more than 50 cameras and over 250 hours of footage consisting of everything from DV to HD to 35mm film. Using a digital intermediate workflow, all of this content was converted into a digital format to edit and deliver the 95-minute feature.
"Compiling and editing the various forms of media provided us with quite a challenge," said Dana Brown, director of Dust to Glory. "However, we chose Adobe Premiere Pro and quickly came to realize it was the answer we needed to tell our story in HD and stay within our budget. We were glad we went with the Adobe-based solution -- the final film quality blew our expectations out of the water."
Combining Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects with CineForm's Prospect HD real-time multi-stream engine, the BOXX HD (pro) RT workstation gave Brown and his team a complete finishing platform for Dust to Glory. This digital intermediate workflow removed the need for expensive, difficult to use proprietary systems, bringing HD post-production directly to the desktop. The combined solution enabled the producers to work within the desired 10Bit 4:2:2 HD workflow to edit, color correct and finish the entire feature, while preserving frame size, bit depth and color space throughout the process. This workflow enabled producers to deliver for digital cinema, as well as a 35mm theatrical film print, directly from the Adobe Premiere Pro timeline.
"This production raises the bar for independent filmmaking," said Steve Saylor, vice president of Digital Video and Audio products for Adobe. "We're excited to see our applications used for such a complex production and are honored to have been involved in such a revolutionary project. I anticipate this will change the way independent filmmaking is done and will bring the possibility of HD filmmaking to a much wider audience. We hope everyone interested in HD goes out to see this film to experience the amazing results of this ground-breaking workflow."
The Adobe Video Collection 2.5 Professional Edition for Windows(R) XP includes Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects Professional, Adobe Audition(TM), Adobe Encore(TM) DVD, and Adobe Photoshop(R) CS software for an estimated street price of US$1499. The Adobe Video Collection 2.5 Standard edition, which contains After Effects Standard and does not contain Photoshop CS, is available for an estimated street price of US$999.
