Virginia Man Wins $1 Million Super Bowl Prize from ALLTEL, Motorola

Virginia Man Wins $1 Million Super Bowl Prize from ALLTEL, Motorola

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. & LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2005--Russell Royal of Lynchburg, Va. is the $1 million winner in the "TXT2Win MVP Sweepstakes" from ALLTEL (NYSE:AT) and Motorola (NYSE:MOT).
Veteran NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall announced Royal's selection as the megaprize winner of the sweepstakes in a television commercial that aired during Super Bowl XXXIX at ALLTEL Stadium. Royal was one of five finalists vying for the $1 million prize. Each finalist also won a trip to the Super Bowl.
"This is a dream come true. It's unbelievable. I'm speechless," Royal said after learning he was the megaprize winner. "I want to thank ALLTEL and Motorola. This is unreal. I told my wife whatever happens, happens. I've tried to do right by everybody all my life, and maybe that's why I won."
Royal, who sent his first-ever text message to enter the sweepstakes, said he planned to use the money to care for his wife and three grandsons as well to tithe to his church.
"Customer response to the Super Bowl promotion was truly super," said Frank O'Mara, executive vice president of sales and marketing for ALLTEL. "We saw a 200 percent increase in wireless data revenue during the fourth quarter of last year, and the four-month long sweepstakes promotion, which was designed to stimulate usage of text messaging and other wireless data services, was a significant contributor to that achievement."
ALLTEL also announced that it was awarding $10,000 to each of the other four finalists: Dennis Winston, Newport News, Va.; Errica Kinard, Salley, S.C.; Paul Millirons, Stow, Ohio; and Loren Green, Quincy, Mich.
"We are thrilled to have partnered with ALLTEL on this amazing promotion," said Jim Alley, GM of sales for Motorola, NA. "At Motorola, the 'device formerly known as the cell phone' has become a medium for a variety of rich mobile communications, including text messaging. This program is a great example of how consumers can experience their favorite things all on the device you never leave home without."
ALLTEL wireless customers entered the "TXT2Win MVP Sweepstakes" by sending a text message to "200539" with the subject line "MVP." Customers were automatically entered again each time they used their phone to send a text message or picture message, or download any wireless data application. The sweepstakes ran Sept. 20-Dec. 31.
Summerall served as the voice talent for the sweepstakes' television and radio campaign. Summerall starred as a kicker on the NFL champion New York Giants before a broadcast career with CBS, FOX and ESPN.
