Tim Egan and Olivia Judson Join NYTimes.com as Weekly Columnists

NYTimes.com today announced the addition of two online weekly columnists to the Opinion section, Tim Egan and Olivia Judson; Allison Arieff, who has contributed occasionally to the Opinion section, will now write a monthly column. Mr. Egan, an 18-year veteran of The Times who is based on the West Coast, will write Outposts, an online column appearing every Thursday. Outposts addresses environmental, economic and political issues. His first post which examines the class tensions between Mike Huckabee’s campaign and the Republican Party can be found at: http://egan.blogs.nytimes.com/. Ms. Judson is an evolutionary biologist and author. She will write a weekly online column called The Wild Side that will appear every Wednesday. Her column discusses contemporary evolutionary issues; her first post which examines the possibility of breeding bluefin tuna from mackerel embryos can be found at: http://judson.blogs.nytimes.com/. Additionally, Allison Arieff, a design author, will write By Design, a column on design. Her column will debut on Jan. 15 and thereafter will appear online on the second Tuesday of each month. We're pleased to be bringing our readers her insights on architecture, design, style and the environment.” As regular contributors to the Opinion section, Mr. Egan, Ms. Judson and Ms. Arieff are joining columnists Stanley Fish, Judith Warner, Dick Cavett and Errol Morris, as well as group blogs on air travel, adoption and posts from soldiers who have returned from Iraq. Mr. Egan joined The Times in 1989, as the Pacific Northwest correspondent, and later worked as a national enterprise reporter. He won a 2006 National Book Award for "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl” (Mariner, 2006). In 2001, he was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the series "How Race is Lived in America.” Ms. Judson wrote a daily column for NYTimes.com in June 2006. Ms. Judson was a reporter for The Economist and has written for Nature, The Financial Times, The Atlantic and Natural History among others. She is the author of "Dr. Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation: The Definitive Guide to the Evolutional Biology of Sex” (Vintage, 2003), which was made into a three-part television program. She is also a research fellow in biology at Imperial College London. Ms. Arieff, founder and former editor in chief of Dwell magazine, is senior content lead for the design and innovation firm IDEO. She is co-author of the books "Prefab” (Gibbs Smith, 2002) and "Trailer Travel” (Gibbs Smith, 2002) and the editor of many books on art and popular culture, including "Airstream: The History of the Land Yacht” (Chronicle Books, 2000) and "Cheap Hotels” (Taschen, 2002).
