Third Annual Humana Starlight Award to Honor Senior Citizen Volunteer
Health-benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is now accepting applications for the third annual Humana Starlight Award honoring a senior citizen volunteer. This year’s award has been expanded to include nominations of seniors providing exceptional volunteer service in Salt Lake County, Utah County, Weber County or Davis County.
As a way of recognizing their community service, Humana will honor the volunteer with a one-time grant by donating $10,000 to the nonprofit organization of the recipient’s choice.
Local nonprofit organizations and individuals are invited to nominate their favorite senior citizen volunteer for the Humana Starlight Award by the application deadline of Wednesday, September 30. The Humana Starlight Award will be presented at a special recognition ceremony in November.
Humana will host a kick-off reception and orientation about the program for nonprofit organizations or individuals wishing to nominate a volunteer from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18 at the Humana Utah Market Office, 9815 South Monroe St. (255 West), Suite 300, in Sandy. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by sending their name, organization name, telephone and e-mail address to jpjeter@humana.com or call Jennifer Pjeter at 801-661-0164.
Humana, one of Utah’s leading providers of Medicare health plans and prescription drug plans, created the Humana Starlight Award to honor an exceptional senior citizen volunteer, as well as to provide financial support for a nonprofit organization whose good work benefits the community. The 2008 Humana Starlight Award recipient in Utah was Dorothy Young, who served as a Senior Companion Program volunteer with Salt Lake County Aging Services for 21 years. Young, who died in June, asked that Humana donate $10,000 on her behalf to the Senior Companion Program.
The 2007 Humana Starlight Award recipient in Utah was Nancy Kilmurray, a long-term care volunteer and certified ombudsman for Salt Lake City Aging Services, an organization that promotes independence by providing support networks for the elderly. In recognition of her service, Humana awarded a $10,000 grant to the Alzheimer’s Association, Utah Chapter.
Nominees for the award are evaluated on the dedication and leadership they have demonstrated, as well as the impact their volunteer efforts have had on others in the community. Special consideration is given for senior volunteers helping other seniors. While the program is sponsored by Humana, a panel of local judges – comprised of community leaders, local executives, physicians and health care providers – evaluates the applications and chooses the award recipient.
"The Humana Starlight Award was created to celebrate a senior citizen who is making a real difference in our community,” said Ed DeVincentis, sales director for Humana MarketPOINT in Utah and Idaho. "We’ve had the pleasure to meet many extraordinary senior citizens who volunteer in their communities. This program is a great way for an organization and community to show their support to volunteers, and recognize the difference they make all around us every day.”
The application deadline for the Humana Starlight Award is September 30. Anyone who is 65 years of age or older and has served as a volunteer for a nonprofit organization in Salt Lake County, Utah County, Weber County or Davis County, is eligible for the Humana Starlight Award. To nominate a senior citizen volunteer, nonprofit organizations must be classified as a 501(c)(3), must provide services for Salt Lake County, Utah County, Weber County or Davis County, must have been in operation for at least a year and cannot have a political or religious affiliation. The organization must serve the community in one of three areas:
- Mind: Organizations or institutions that seek to improve the educational landscape resulting in higher levels of achievement
- Body: Organizations or human service agencies engaged in the promotion of healthy bodies and lifestyles
- Spirit: Civic & cultural development organizations that seek to inspire communities and enliven the human spirit
