The New York Times Student Journalism Institute Accepts 30 Students in
Business Editors
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 2005--The New York Times Student Journalism Institute today announced that 30 applicants have been admitted into its third annual program to be held from May 14 to 29 at Dillard University in New Orleans.
William Schmidt, associate managing editor of resources and planning, The New York Times, said, "The New York Times Student Journalism Institute gives the New York Times the opportunity to help shape the way future generations of newsrooms will look and operate and to give back to the HBCU's for their tireless work in providing talent for the nation's newspapers. And we congratulate these bright young men and women who are joining the Institute family."
In its first two years the Institute has graduated 60 students and gained recognition as one of the top training opportunities for aspiring newspaper journalists.
Students at the Institute hone their writing, reporting, editing and photography skills covering real news stories and working under actual newsroom deadline pressure. They learn from journalists from The New York Times, The Boston Globe and the Times Company's Regional Media Group. The program is a collaborative venture with the Black College Communications Association, an organization of faculty members committed to developing strong journalism programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
One telling assessment of the Institute came from a Howard University senior two years ago. "I learned more about myself than anything else," she said. "I learned what's expected in the real world."
During the Institute, the students post their work on a Web site (www.nytimes-institute.com), and at the end of the two weeks they produce a newspaper. The 24-page, two-section newspaper provides clips and is distributed, among other places, at the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention and at the annual HBCU Newspaper Convention and Job Fair. It is printed by The Courier, a Times Company daily newspaper in Houma, La.
Editors around the country are invited to view the students' work at the Web site.
The 30 students selected for this year's program represent 17 HBCU's, including two colleges that have not previously had students at the Institute. The program accepts applications from promising students in any class year who are in good academic standing and have worked for at least one semester on a student publication. Many also have experience as interns or employees of a news organization.
This year's students are: Stacy Alexandra Anderson, Howard University; Elizabeth Sue Bertrand, Lincoln University of Missouri; Nicholas R. Birdsong, Florida A&M University; Madia Brown, Norfolk State University; Terrell Bryant, Benedict College; Tanya Caldwell, Florida A&M University; LeMont Calloway, Florida A&M University; Stanley Chollette, Louisiana Tech University (via Grambling State University); Malachi Daraja, Morgan State University; Aaron Daye, North Carolina Central University; Jessica De Vault; North Carolina A&T State University; Markel A.
