''The JCPenney JAM...The Concert for America's Kids,'' Hosted by Dr. Phil and Featuring an All-Star Line-up of Performers, to Be Broadcast on the CBS Television Network
The "JCPenney JAM...The Concert for America's Kids," broadcastingas a one-hour special on the CBS Televison Network on Aug. 22 at 8:00p.m. Eastern/Pacific, will mark the largest project ever undertaken inAmerica to raise awareness of the need for working families to haveaccess to quality afterschool programs.
Hosted by Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw and music-directed by DavidFoster, viewers can tune in to the concert to enjoy performances by amulti-genre lineup of music icons. Appearances include renownedartists Jon Bon Jovi, Sting and Mary J. Blige, country superstarsKenny Chesney, Sara Evans and Martina McBride, jazz star Chris Botti,rock supergroup 3 Doors Down, legendary vocal tenor Andrea Bocelli,Latin GRAMMY(R) winning pop star Alejandro Sanz and GRAMMY(R) winningR&B artist John Legend.
"In order to bring this critical issue into the nationalspotlight, JCPenney wanted to create an effective vehicle to reachworking parents across the country. From that emerged "The JCPenneyJAM...The Concert for America's Kids," said Michael Theilmann,chairman of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. "With the help of theparticipating musicians and influential partners such as the NFL, theJCPenney JAM television special has the potential to reach millions ofAmericans and generate a great deal of support for the afterschoolcause."
This school year more than 10,000 children across the nation willparticipate in safe, enriching afterschool programs through thesupport of JCPenney Afterschool Fund grants. The Fund will contributeover $7 million in grants to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, YMCA ofthe USA, National 4-H and United Way of America, to provide youth withaccess to quality afterschool programs. Additionally, JCPenney willcontribute over $1 million in gift cards in support of the JCPenneyAfterschool Fund grants. Each child who receives a grant will alsoreceive a $100 JCPenney gift card to help with the purchase ofclothing and supplies for the upcoming school year.
The growing problem of inadequate afterschool supervision forAmerica's youth cuts across all ethnic, income and demographicboundaries. Recent studies show that 14.3 million children in theUnited States are unsupervised after school between the hours of 3p.m. and 6 p.m. each day. Studies also show that youth are at greaterrisk of involvement in crime, drug abuse and other destructivebehaviors during these hours. High-quality afterschool programs keepchildren safe and help to produce life-changing, lasting benefits,including healthier lifestyles, improved social skills and enhancedacademic performance.
Beginning Aug. 23, a DVD/CD twin-pack of the entire three-hourJCPenney JAM concert and "behind the scenes" material will beavailable exclusively at JCPenney stores and online at jcp.com.JCPenney JAM hosts Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have also created aspecial DVD entitled "A Real World Afterschool Partnership," whichdiscusses the need for afterschool programs and includes helpfuladvice on how to get involved. Sales from the JCPenney JAM DVD/CDtwin-pack, the Dr. Phil/Robin McGraw DVD and the individual JAM artistCDs will go to support the JAM initiative and the JCPenney AfterschoolFund.
