The Boston Globe Promotes Two on Editorial Page

The Boston Globe made two top appointments to the editorial page, publisher P. Steven Ainsley announced today. Dante Ramos will become deputy editor of the editorial page and Donald MacGillis will become assistant editorial page editor, effective May 14. Both Mr. Ramos and Mr. MacGillis will report to Renee Loth, editor of the editorial page. Mr. Ramos, 35, joined the Globe as a member of the editorial board in 2006. For six years before that he was deputy editor of the editorial page at the Times-Picayune in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina forced the evacuation of the newspaper offices, he was one of a handful of staffers who volunteered to stay in the city to maintain coverage, and he helped rebuild the paper's opinion pages after it returned to print publication. He was also a beat reporter covering education and local government for the Times-Picayune. Mr. Ramos is a native of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and graduated from Harvard College with a B.A. in government. He has written for The Economist, The New Republic, Salon.com, and The New York Times Book Review, among other publications. He succeeds Robert Turner as deputy editorial page editor, who is retiring after 42 years with the Globe. Mr. MacGillis, 60, has been a member of the editorial board, writing mostly about medicine, science and the environment, since 2000. Before that he held posts as assistant metro editor and assistant city editor at the Globe. He joined the Globe in 1995 to direct "The People's Voice," a journalism project aimed at enhancing civic engagement in the 1996 presidential campaign. For more than 20 years before joining the Globe, Mr. MacGillis worked at the Berkshire Eagle, eventually becoming executive editor and editorial page editor, among other positions. He served as a medic and public affairs assistant in the U.S. Army, and received a degree in English from Yale. He divides his time between homes in Brighton and Pittsfield, Mass. Reflecting on these changes, Ms. Loth stated, "After 42 years at the Globe Bob Turner is a local legend and of course very hard to replace, but with this new team we expect to continue the important work of providing informed, authoritative local opinion to the Globe's readers both in our editorials and on the op ed page. Dante Ramos is a fresh, thoughtful voice I know the community will come to know and trust. Don is a consummate newsman whose many contributions to the Globe deserve this recognition."
