Organizations Worldwide Migrate to Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15 for Their High Performance, Mission-Critical Applications
Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), an industry leader in delivering enterprise and mobile software, today announced continuing momentum for the adoption of Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) 15. Through superior database performance, effective management of rapidly growing data sets, and enhanced reliability, Sybase® customers worldwide are successfully running mission-critical applications on ASE 15.
Several application partners such as Calypso, Bradmark, Mysis and SunGard and systems management, storage and tools providers including BMC, Bradmark, Guardium and Orsyp have certified their products with ASE 15 to ensure that joint customers’ growing data management requirements are met.
"As the requirement for more reliable, secure, and high performing database management systems accelerates in the face of unprecedented data challenges, the number of organizations considering migration to ASE 15 has grown significantly, " said Tony Morrison, vice president, professional services, Sybase. "Sybase Professional Services can make the migration to ASE 15 easy. Based on our extensive experience, we ensure migration success and the best usage of the new features and capabilities of ASE 15 on a customized basis through a range of services including planning, implementation and management of the production environment."
Numerous organizations benefit from superior database performance, effective management of rapidly growing data sets, and enhanced reliability including:
BJC HealthCare significantly increases performance with ASE 15
As one of the largest non-profit health care organizations in the United States, BJC HealthCare (www.bjc.org) is responsible for tracking medications for close to three million distinct patients. BJC utilizes Sybase ASE 15 and Sybase Professional Services for its pharmaceutical decision support system. The medical informatics repository now contains more than 200 million discretely coded observations for 10.1 million encounters on 2.9 million distinct persons. Needing only four hours of downtime to fully migrate to ASE 15, BJC has decreased database query times from an average of 108 seconds to 46 seconds, with one query going from almost 24 hours to around 50 minutes.
"Our DoseRanger application is the definition of a mission-critical, high transaction volume process. It screens every active medication order and compares it with patient information to determine if the dose is appropriate,” said Laura Noirot, manager, applications development, BJC Healthcare. "With our rapid migration to ASE 15, we have been able to decrease processing time by an average of about one hour to eight minutes.”
MIQS relies on the power of ASE 15 to manage large data sets
MIQS, Inc. (www.miqs.com) provides a knowledge-based healthcare information technology solution to over 5,500 clinicians assisting with the management of business and clinical processes in the care of chronically ill patients. The company depends on Sybase ASE 15 for its flagship product, the Disease Manager Plus software suite, which combines patient electronic medical records, practice management, and decision-support functions within a completely integrated and analyzable application infrastructure. The suite transforms all patient data for immediate interpretation by the caregiver at the point-of-care, helping identify those most at risk quickly and efficiently. At the same time, the powerful database captures the information needed to unify all other aspects of management, from supply management and analysis, billing, budgeting, regulatory compliance and communication, to financial analysis.
"The value of the ASE 15 technology we use in our solution is largely due to its power to manage large sets of clinical, financial, administrative and management data in a unitary database. Sybase’s reliability, support and technical advances are a key part of our ability to deliver efficient, effective systems to our customers. Our clients are then enabled to improve the quality of care to thousands of people who suffer from chronic disease,” said George Rovegno, CEO, MIQS, Inc. "With MIQS running on ASE 15, we have demonstrated a 40% reduction in mortality in renal disease patients.”
Garvan Institute depends on ASE 15 for availability of mission-critical applications
As one of Australia's largest medical research institutions with more than five-hundred scientists, students and support staff, Garvin Institute’s (www.garvan.org.au) work encompasses a range of diseases that affect people from early childhood throughout adulthood, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis and obesity. The organization relies on ASE 15 to compile and analyze research data for more than 30 separate databases. The more accurately Garvan’s researchers produce results, the more precise they can be in their research findings – leading to a better understanding of disease-management therapies. The upgrade to ASE 15 has allowed Garvan to achieve higher rates application availability, while ensuring that queries are running even faster with better utilization of its servers.
"ASE 15 truly helps us understand what happens when we troubleshoot an application, and its integrity-checking feature has helped us identify issues before they become problems, which has helped keep our system up and running consistently,” said Jim McBride, information technology director, Garvan Institute.
Migrating to ASE 15
Today, well over a thousand customers are running their applications on ASE 15 and most have found the migration process to be relatively easy and painless including:
Elluminate rapidly migrates to ASE 15 with ease
Elluminate (www.elluminate.com) provides software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for online learning and collaboration services to its customers. Solutions include providing real-time, personalized sessions, even offering one-on-one instructor interaction capabilities. With Sybase ASE 15 managing its core systems, Elluminate relies on ASE 15 scalability and high-volume transactional capabilities to meet increasing demands. Migrating to ASE 15 in weeks, Elluminate immediately saw in some cases a hundred-fold improvement in performance and now has headroom for additional expansion and capabilities.
"To put it simply, ASE 15 just runs,” said David Schroth, director of technical operations, Elluminate. "We migrated during our peak time of the year and still surpassed our own performance expectations.”
New Resources Accelerate ASE 15 Adoption
To further assist with the migration to ASE 15, Sybase is announcing a range of resources and tools for customers, including: a free three-day ASE 15 Post-Migration Performance Tuning online education course, a Query Processing Tuning (QP TUNE) analysis tool that identifies problems such as slow running queries and creates missing statistics, and ASE 15 Migration Consulting Services.
