GM Acquires Driverless Tech Start-up Strobe

(RTTNews) - General Motors Co., (GM) Monday said it acquired LIDAR technology company Strobe Inc. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

As part of the deal, the three-year-old Pasadena, California-based company's engineering talent joins GM's Cruise Automation team to develop LIDAR solutions for self-driving vehicles, the company said.

LIDAR-- Light Detection and Ranging-- is laser-based remote sensing method that allows driverless vehicless to examine the surface of the Earth.

"Strobe's LIDAR technology will significantly improve the cost and capabilities of our vehicles so that we can more quickly accomplish our mission to deploy driverless vehicles at scale," said Kyle Vogt, Founder and CEO, Cruise Automation.

Last week, GM had announced its plans to go "all-electric, with the automaker to roll out a total of 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023.
