Design New England Magazine Adds ''Green'' Feature and New Associate and Contributing Editors

Beginning with its July/August issue, Design New England: The Magazine of Splendid Homes and Gardens, introduces an expanded focus on "Green” design as a regular department covering environmentally friendly developments in furnishings, landscape and architecture. The magazine, published by Boston Globe Media, also welcomes Molly Jane Quinn as a new associate editor and adds three additional contributing editors to its fold: Meaghan O’Neill, Estelle Bond Guralnick and Bruce Irving. The new recurring Green feature will highlight products, people and design ideas that will help readers design, build and live in more environmentally responsible ways. The July/August issue features a roundup of outdoor chairs made of sustainable or recycled materials; a profile of Boston landscape designer Michael Blier, who created eco-savvy outdoor spaces for a luxury condominium building; and a focus on a Maine house that won the nation’s highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating. Ms. Quinn is a Cape Cod native who studied journalism at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst (interning in the newsroom of The Boston Globe), then headed west to Las Vegas for a stint covering design. She recently returned to Boston, and brings with her a love of interiors, architecture and the arts. "Molly’s enthusiasm for design is matched by her strong writing and editing skills,” says Jill Connors, editor, Design New England. The magazine’s "Green” department will be led by Ms. O’Neill, who specializes in green design and helped to launch TreeHugger, a popular Web site dedicated to the modern green lifestyle. A writer who lives in Newport, Rhode Island, Ms. O’Neill contributes to I.D., The Boston Globe Magazine, Slate.com, and Interior Design, among others. Her upcoming book on living green will be published by Villard in the spring of 2008. "I am blessed with a New England pragmatism that makes me cringe at the sight of wastefulness, says Ms. O’Neill. Ms. Guralnick joins Design New England as a contributing editor for Style & Interiors. She has been writing about design for many years and her work appears regularly in Traditional Home as well as The Boston Sunday Globe. "Photo styling and the variety of creative people I meet are the best parts of the job,” says Ms. Guralnick, who lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Irving, a writer and home renovation consultant based in Cambridge, joins Design New England as contributing editor for Renovation & Architecture. Mr. Irving produced television’s "This Old House” for 17 years. His philosophy is that "good projects are always worth celebrating, because they inspire the rest of us to do likewise.” Design New England’s July/August issue is on newsstands now. The magazine’s September/October issue, available September 4, will focus primarily on renovations. The November/December Design New England, available November 5, will be a special First Anniversary edition profiling New England’s up-and-coming designers and architects.
