Tribune Interactive Websites Receive Prized EPpy Awards
CHICAGO, June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tribune Interactive (TI), a subsidiary of Tribune Company , today announced that TI websites Newsday.com and ChicagoSports.com were recipients of 2006 Editor & Publisher EPpy Awards. The EPpys, sponsored by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines, have honored the best online services that are affiliated with the media industry since 1996.
Newsday.com was honored as "Best Special Feature in an Internet Service-Enterprise (more than one million unique visitors)" for its series "Fire Alarm." ChicagoSports.com received the award for "Best Internet Sports Service (less than one million unique visitors)." This is the fifth time the EPpy Awards have honored Newsday.com. This is the first award for ChicagoSports.com, making a total of nine EPpys for Chicago Tribune Interactive.
"We're delighted that Editor & Publisher has recognized our sites and content with these EPpys," said Brigid Kenney, Tribune Interactive senior vice president and general manager. "These awards highlight the outstanding work of our teams at both Newsday.com and ChicagoSports.com, and our dedication to providing quality content across our network."
Newsday.com received the EPpy for the site's eight-part series, "Fire Alarm," which provided an in-depth examination of the Long Island fire service. A controversial topic for the area, the all-volunteer fire districts are tax-dollar funded, but privately run. Newsday.com compiled the first comprehensive picture of the finances and performance of the fire system in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The story ran as an eight-day series in the print edition of Newsday, and in expanded form with video and other interactive features on Newsday.com.
The "Fire Alarm" series was written by Elizabeth Moore, with research compiled by Stacey Altherr. Web editors Dennis Elder and Jonathan McCarthy oversaw the project, along with photo editor Jane Hwang and art director Rich Loretoni. Also contributing were copy editors Kathy Drouin-Keith and David J. Lopez; Artists Rod Eyer and Justin Gilbert; web designers Barbara Teleha and Joe Garraffo and web contributors Amanda Barrett, Robert Cassidy, Meredith Daniels, Mark La Monica, Connie Mango, Brian Marilla and John Paraskevas.
ChicagoSports.com was recognized for its overall performance as "Best Sports Site." The website provides continuous, in-depth coverage of the Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks and other professional sports teams as well as college and high-school sports. Hundreds of thousands of active registered users track and discuss their favorite Chicago sports teams every month on the site. Users are also able to purchase sports memorabilia, play trivia games, interact with other die-hard fans on message boards and have their questions answered by leading sports authorities.
ChicagoSports.com is under the direction of Alison Scholly, general manager/Chicago Tribune Interactive; George Knue, product manager and producers Adam Caldarelli, Greg Gugger, Christopher King and Rahula Strohl.
The EPpys, which are awarded by Editor & Publisher magazine, honor Internet sites that are affiliated with the media industry, especially newspapers, television networks and affiliates, radio networks, syndicated shows, local radio stations and magazines.
