WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 2005--The PMI Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by The PMI Group, Inc. (NYSE:PMI), announced today that it has issued a $100,000 grant to the Unity Council of Oakland, CA. The grant will support the Unity Council's HomeOwnership Center, which provides first-time homeownership opportunities for low-income residents of Oakland and Alameda County.
Proceeds from the grant will fund a Home Buying Counselor position for two years. The Home Buying Counselor position is significant because the counselor oversees bilingual homeownership and financial management counseling programs. These programs include free monthly education workshops designed to help first-time homebuyers navigate through the homeownership process.
PMI announced the issuance of this grant during a retirement celebration for Arabella Martinez, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of the Unity Council. Ms. Martinez has been the face of the Unity Council's success since she was appointed its first executive director in 1969. Ms. Martinez has held the post of Chief Executive Officer since 1990. Gilda Gonzales is the new Chief Executive Officer of the Unity Council.
"This is a bittersweet moment for PMI. Arabella Martinez is not only a dear friend and a valued business partner of PMI; she is a tremendous leader with great vision. She has given her heart and soul to improve the quality of life for residents of the Fruitvale District. We're proud to celebrate her accomplishments and we wish her all the best," said Roger Haughton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The PMI Group, Inc.
"I've been very fortunate to know a number of gifted PMI leaders on both personal and professional levels. These relationships truly represent what the Unity Council is all about, and have enriched not only my life, but the lives of many Fruitvale District residents. I thank PMI for the company's support over the years, and especially on my special day," said Arabella Martinez.
"PMI and the Unity Council are natural business partners, but more significantly, we have forged a very special relationship. PMI's grant will ensure that the Unity Council's mission will thrive in the coming years. I look forward to strengthening our relationship with PMI as we work together to create homeownership opportunities for deserving families in Oakland," said Gilda Gonzales.
The Unity Council (formally called The Spanish Speaking Unity Council) was founded in 1964, incorporated in 1967 and received 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status in 1968. Over the years it has been a non-profit community development organization committed to enriching the quality of life of families primarily in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. Its primary focus has been to create a healthier and safer community for families and residents.
The purpose of the PMI Foundation is to foster the goal of home ownership and provide access to affordable housing for under served areas and populations. The PMI Foundation does this by supporting national and local organizations that create housing opportunities and help revitalize neighborhoods in communities throughout the United States and around the world.
