STMicroelectronics Collaborates with Local Partners in China to Enrich IoT Development Ecosystem and Stimulate Creation of Smart Things

Beijing, China, December 8, 2015 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, announces that its efforts to enrich the IoT development ecosystem have been further strengthened by the recent adoption of its STM32 Nucleo Development Kit by the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University and for the Xiao Gang Pao IoT development system by JUMA, an IoT software platform company.

The STM32 Nucleo Kit has been adopted by the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Peking University for its Electronic System Design Project. Relying on ST's STM32F401 Nucleo (mother board), X-Nucleo-IDB04A1 (daughter board), and X-Nucleo-IKS01 (sensor board), together with the ARM® mbed(TM) online software development platform, the new course provides students with a complete toolset to develop Smart Things and IoT applications.

"STMicroelectronics' STM32 Nucleo-based Smart-Thing development kit together with its teaching resources provides a fast, easy-to-learn and -use tool-set enabling our students to quickly grasp the skills necessary to develop microprocessor, sensor, and Bluetooth applications," said Duan Xiao Hui, Professor of Engineering, EECS, Peking University. "Combined with innovative project experiments, the ST tool-set has laid a solid foundation for the students' future career development."

In addition to supporting the IoT design courses at EECS, ST has been working with JUMA, a software company focusing on providing Bluetooth software IP and fast IoT development platform, helping developers accelerate the translation of an idea into a prototype and product. The ST/JUMA cooperation sets to support the growing number of small- and medium-sized IoT design houses and startups unlocking their innovation potential in both hardware and software.

Xiao Gang Pao (XGP, Little Cannon) from JUMA Inc demonstrates the power of ST's IoT components and development tools in innovative designs. XGP integrates, on a business-card-sized printed-circuit board, several components from ST ideally suited to IoT applications: a BlueNRG-MS low-power BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) network processor; an LSM6DS3, the industry's lowest-power gyroscope/accelerometer combo in a 3x2.5mm package; an LPS25HB, a unique pressure sensor in an innovative, dust-free, water-resistant and stress-proof package; an HTS221 temperature and humidity sensor; and an LSM303AGR magnetometer/accelerometer combo in a 2x2mm package.

In addition, the on-board implementation of JUMA(TM) software IP modules enables designers to develop complete IoT applications quickly, including all the embedded, mobile applications, and cloud part, based on JUMA.IO(TM) SDK and the open-source examples. As a result, developers can easily verify their prototypes and make them into real products.

"ST's broad portfolio of ARM-core-based MCUs, MEMS sensors, wireless connectivity, and power-management solutions constitutes an industry-leading IoT platform," said Tian Dan, Founder of JUMA Inc. "Innovative IoT applications can spring up everywhere. So JUMA and ST have worked closely on creating an IoT ecosystem that leverages JUMA.IO, together with our IoT IPs and deep application knowledge, to enable fast creation of IoT applications based on ST's IoT components.

"ST has focused on creating localized approaches to IoT application developers, from universities and open communities to the end customers in China, and our open development environment, which combines the STM32 MCU portfolio with analog devices, sensors, and Bluetooth technologies, enables fast creation of turnkey designs from a hardware prototype to software integration," said Collins Wu, Marketing Director of Analog, MEMS and Sensors, Greater China & South Asia, STMicroelectronics. "ST's MCUs and sensors, together with our low-power connectivity, attract considerable interest from innovative IoT companies like JUMA. ST will continue to work with system designers fostering the development of Smart-Life applications in the Industry 4.0, Smart Home, Smart Driving, and Smart City domains."

ST's Analog, MEMS & Sensors (AMS) team has also played an active part in nurturing the Innovator Community and Smart Hardware Development Platform in China, establishing a Chinese-speaking engineer community, st_AMSchina, a service subscription on Wechat, as well as the MEMS QQ Group.
