Rohm and Haas to Present New Findings in Rubber-to-Metal Bonding Technology

Technical experts from specialty materials company Rohm and Haas (NYSE:ROH) will present new findings and introduce new products related to rubber-to-metal bonding at the upcoming 174th Technical Meeting and Rubber Mini Expo. The Expo is sponsored by the Rubber Division, American Chemical Society (ACS) and will be held in Louisville from October 14-16. The Rubber Division, ACS, is the leading membership-driven organization in the rubber industry and a key group involved in the dissemination of the latest developments in rubber technology.

Dr. Roger A. Cassell, senior technical service representative, Rubber-to-Metal Bonding Technology, Rohm and Haas, will be presenting a technical paper as part of the "New Commercial Developments session. The presentation, entitled "Systematic Approach to Rubber-to-Metal Bonding Part 1: Aqueous Silane Bonding Systems for Gasket and Seal Applications, will provide designers and manufacturers of highly engineered components with a new approach to utilizing the adhesive supplier, rigid substrate pre-treatment process, and rubber compound development process in a more efficient manner. Dr. Cassell, who has more than 23 years of experience in these areas, will discuss the use of water-based silane rubber-to-metal bonding agents and the methodology necessary to design and advance a bonding system within the manufactured part for gasket and seal applications.

"The increasing demands for improved performance and durability of highly engineered parts has driven a change in the development of the next generation of bonding agents, says Dr. David Kistner, North American manager for Transportation Adhesives, Rohm and Haas. "Understanding the uniqueness of the rubber-to-metal bonding agent as the partner to the surface and the unifying chemistries applied, as well as the rubber, has been instrumental in Rohm and Haas broadening our support to our customers, both in terms of the development of innovative products and of technical support.

Among the innovative Rohm and Haas products to be introduced at the show are two water-based, one-coat adhesives for the seal and gasket market that provide excellent layover stability and long-lasting bonds. New Megum W 2535-LD waterborne adhesive was developed to bond heat-curable silicone rubbers to metals and other rigid substrates during vulcanization. It is also suitable for bonding peroxide-cured EPDM, HNBR, NBR, and AEM compounds. Innovative Megum W 2535-LD is expected to replace many solvent-based bonding products.

New Megum W 2010-LD waterborne adhesive was designed for consistently high performance in the bonding of fluoro-elastomers, Vamac® (DuPont), and polyacrylate elastomers even the non-oven-post-cured (NOPC) technology types. Along with Megum W 2535-LD adhesive, it exhibits excellent pot life.

Also featured at Rubber Mini Expo is Megum 5382 solvent-based adhesive, a general-purpose cover coat adhesive used in combination with a Megum or Thixon adhesive primer for bonding rubber compounds to metals and other rigid substrates during vulcanization. The product is especially suitable for high-temperature and high-performance applications, in combination with Thixon P6-EF primer withstanding even the challenging requirements of glycol-filled engine mounts represented in Americas Corvette sports car.
