Netflix Purging 100 Titles, Including Some Classics
(RTTNews) - Netflix (NFLX) is purging nearly 100 titles at the stroke of midnight, so subscribers will have to skip out on New Year's parties for one last viewing of classics like "Top Gun" or "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo."
The streaming media service has not said why it is getting rid of some of its most popular titles, but tells CNN that it routinely adds and deletes titles from its streaming service due to licensing issues.
Among the movies unavailable as of January 1 are "Platoon," "War Games," "Being John Malkovich," "Braveheart," "Do the Right Thing," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and "Titanic."
TV shows on the way out include "Dark Shadows" and "Saturday Night Live The 2000s."
Meanwhile, Netflix is testing a new program that will discount its cheapest monthly service from $7.99 to $6.99 for customers needing to watch content on only one screen at a time.
The company will continue to offer its "family plan" for $11.99 per month. Customers subscribing to that plan can watch on four TVs at once.
Netflix stock has been one of the year's best performers. Shares are up almost 300 percent in 2013, thanks in part to critically acclaimed original programming like "House of Cards" starring Kevin Spacey.
