Nancy Kilmurray Receives the 1st Annual Humana Starlight Award, Honoring Senior Citizen Volunteers in Salt Lake City

Nancy Kilmurray has been selected as the recipient of the Humana Starlight Award, honoring the efforts of senior citizens who volunteer in the Salt Lake City area. In recognition of her service, Humana (NYSE: HUM) awarded a $10,000 grant to the Alzheimer’s Association, Utah Chapter, the nonprofit organization of Kilmurray’s choosing. Nancy Kilmurray is a long-term care volunteer and certified ombudsman for Salt Lake City Aging Services, an organization that promotes independence by providing assistance support networks for the elderly populations. Through this volunteer role, she has developed relationships with residents, mediated concerns and monitored facilities for maintenance, cleanliness and safety. Kilmurray is responsible for five facilities and 553 residents, most of who note that it’s her personality and caring attitude that makes their experience with her and the organization worthwhile. "Nancy has demonstrated exceptional leadership through volunteerism in the professionalism she exhibits in all of her volunteer work,” said Shauna O’Neil, executive director of Salt Lake County Aging Services. "The position of an Ombudsman comes with a complex and extensive learning curve. Nancy grasped this multifaceted position quickly and leveraged her own life skills to better relate to residents. She is a credit to our program and we are fortunate to have her as part of the team.” The Starlight Award was created to honor an exceptional senior citizen volunteer, as well as to provide financial support for a nonprofit organization whose good work benefits the community. Nonprofit organizations from throughout Salt Lake County nominated their top senior citizen volunteers for the award, and nominees were evaluated on the dedication and leadership they demonstrated, as well as the impact their volunteer efforts had on others in the community. "Nancy is such a deserving recipient for the Humana Starlight Award,” said Debbie Smith, regional president of Senior Products for Humana’s Western Region. "Her compassion and support for helping others is exactly what we need more of and recognition of this is why this award was created. We are excited to present it to someone as amazing as Nancy.” The Humana Starlight Award was presented at a special recognition ceremony on Nov. 8 at the Salt Lake City Public Library. A panel of local judges evaluated the applications and chose the award recipient. Judges included Senator Greg Bell, Utah State Senate, District 22; Jim Boylen, head men’s basketball coach at the University of Utah; Ed DeVincentis, director of Humana’s MarketPOINT Senior Products in Utah; and Earl Hurst, president of Commercial Products for Humana of Utah. The Humana Starlight Award began last year in Nebraska. In addition to continuing the award in that state, Humana presented a similar award in Grand Rapids, Mich., and will present one in Des Moines, Iowa, as well. Anyone who is 65 years of age or older and has served as a volunteer for a nonprofit organization is eligible for the Humana Starlight Award. To nominate a senior citizen volunteer, nonprofit organizations must be classified as a 501(c)(3) and serve the community in one of three areas: Mind: Organizations or institutions that seek to improve the educational landscape, resulting in higher levels of achievement Body: Organizations or human service agencies engaged in the promotion of healthy bodies and lifestyles Spirit: Civic & cultural development organizations that seek to inspire communities and enliven the human spirit For more information about the Humana Starlight Award, visit http://www.humana.com/about/company_information/starlight.asp About Humana Humana Inc., headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the nation’s largest publicly traded health benefits companies, with approximately 11.3 million medical members, including more than 170,000 in Michigan.
