Keynote to Reveal Findings of First-Ever Performance Monitoring Study of Streaming Video Quality at Top User-Generated Video Web Sites
Keynote (Nasdaq:KEYN), The Mobile and Internet Performance Authority™,
today announced that it will reveal the findings of its first-ever
performance monitoring study of streaming video quality at popular
user-generated video (UGV) Web sites including YouTube, Yahoo! Video,
Revver, MetaCafe, Grouper and others during an upcoming Webinar. The
Webinar will take place on Thursday March 8th,
2007 at 11:00 AM Pacific (2:00 PM Eastern) and is produced by Streaming
Media magazine and StreamingMedia.com.
In addition to revealing the results of the UGV performance monitoring
study, the experts from Keynote and AccuStream will identify the
companies that are succeeding in this highly competitive space,
illustrate why and how they are doing it, and provide insights into
which sites are the best bets for both content and advertising. Leading
the discussion will be Jeff Geiser, global director of streaming media
at Keynote and Paul Palumbo, research director for AccuStream iMedia
Research. Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, Editor-in-Chief of Streaming Media
Magazine will moderate the online event.
The Webinar will also cover the following topics:
Analysis of the types of content that draw the most eyeballs;
UGV advertising metrics and what drives views;
How technical factors — connect time, buffer
time, latency, availability, and more —
affect video site performance; and
What does it all mean for advertisers and content publishers who
leverage these sites?
The Keynote study of user-generated video Web sites, the first of its
kind, monitored the stream quality of the top-rated video at 20 of the
leading Web destinations for user-generated video (including UGV
specialists, such as YouTube and Revver, as well as portal players like
Yahoo! Video) using Keynote’s Streaming
Perspective™ streaming quality test and
measurement solution. Measurements took place from Jan. 1st to Jan. 31st,
2006 with a total of 230,000 total measurements taken over the course of
the study. Keynote then assessed the performance of those streams based
on metrics that include availability, connect time and buffer time.
Performance measurements were taken from 14 cities worldwide, with
bandwidth limited to 500kbps for all sites/streams to provide a level
playing field.
Streaming Perspective is a commercially available on-demand service that
measures the quality and reliability of streaming media delivery the way
users experience it. Streaming Perspective is an extremely effective
early warning system for alerting key stakeholders to service
availability issues or user experience deterioration, allowing them to
measure the quality and reliability of audio and video streams from
multiple geographic locations around the world, all from the end-user
perspective. It is used by major Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and
Fortune 500 companies to measure and improve the quality of their
streaming media delivery.
"User quality of experience will increasingly become a key factor in
determining which UGV sites are able to maintain high levels of user
adoption and retention,” said Jeff Geiser,
global director of streaming media and VoIP at Keynote. "Content
producers and advertisers will similarly evaluate the quality of
delivery when choosing distribution channels for their content and
advertising campaigns."
User-generated video hosting and distribution sites have emerged as
viable outlets for individuals, as well as semi-professional and
professional content producers over the past two years. UGV sites have
also expanded to include branded content channels from rights holders
such as CBS, NBC and others creating unique identities in UGV
environments.
UGV views totaled over 30 billion in 2006, up over 450% from 2005,
according to AccuStream iMedia Research. The segment is gaining
additional momentum now that high production value content from rights
holders and advertisers is entering these libraries. Further, with
abundant metadata produced during engagement of UGV content, there is a
new opportunity to carve out performance-driven advertising value from
this rich back channel.
"User-generated video is evolving quickly into
both a lean forward and lean back experience,”
noted Paul A. Palumbo, research director with AccuStream. "Much
like the medium itself, audiences are getting more sophisticated —
and quickly. They are browsing UGV libraries in rapid discovery mode to
seek out what might be enjoyable, but also searching for specific files
of interest and then hitting play, including longer form content. In
both orientations, performance matters. UGV is about the community, and
the community’s visual voice. With libraries
containing millions of files, it is incumbent on these sites to ensure
experiences that fully enable the experience of finding what is
entertaining.”
