Humana Supports Veterans And Their Families Through Innovative Symposium

Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), in conjunction with the Ryan Family Foundation and the American Legion, will host a symposium Thurs., April 19 for veterans and military families in New Orleans at The National World War II Museum.

The one-day event will build awareness of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program in the New Orleans area. The EBV, founded in 2007 at Syracuse University, will join Humana and The Ryan Family Foundation in hosting the event.

Through Humana’s national Veterans Initiative, the company committed to recruit 1,000 qualified military veterans and/or their spouses by the end of 2013 to become Humana associates, working in roles across the company.

Humana is also contributing $1 million to the EBV, a national program that offers cutting-edge training in entrepreneurship and small business management at no cost to post-9/11 veterans with service-connected disabilities.

The EBV was established five years ago at Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management and is operated by the university’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). The EBV is offered through a network of leading business and hospitality schools that includes Syracuse, the University of Connecticut, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Purdue University, Texas A&M University, Cornell University and UCLA.

Representing the EBV program and presenting along with Dr. Haynie will be two graduates of the EBV program, Brian Iglesias and Justin Constantine. Dr. Haynie and Iglesias are both Marine officers and veterans of the war in Iraq. Iglesias’ company, Veterans Expeditionary Media, creates and produces a variety of small and large-scale film and multi-media projects for a variety of customers. Constantine is a serial entrepreneur now embarking on additional business ventures. He is currently the associate general counsel at the United States Department of Justice.

Additionally, Major General Ron Richard, USMC(Ret), President and CEO of the Tiger Athletic Foundation at Louisiana State University will speak about veteran and military issues, as well as the EBV program at LSU, which graduated its first class this past February.

The symposium will begin with a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. April 19 in the Stage Door Canteen on the Museum campus at 945 Magazine St. in New Orleans. Following the program, a light buffet lunch will be served. The program is open to veterans, military family members, veteran advisors and representatives of veterans' organizations and programs that assist veterans in returning to civilian life.
