Harris Corporation's Dr. Andrew Clark Receives Distinguished Achievement Award from Marine Technology Society

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dr. Andrew Clark, president of Harris Maritime Communication Services, a subsidiary of Harris Corporation , today received the prestigious Compass Distinguished Achievement Award from the Marine Technology Society. Sponsored by Compass Publications and the Swiss watchmaker Rolex, the award is the industry's highest honor and is presented annually to only one individual among nominees from around the world.

Dr. Clark was honored for his distinguished, 34-year career of significant achievements and contributions to the field of ocean technology. The award was presented during the Oceans 2007 MTS/IEEE conference held September 29 through October 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Harris Maritime Communication Services (MCS) is a pioneer and world leader in developing autonomous ocean observing technology that transmits data from the sea floor and ships at sea. MCS uses this same technology to provide broadband communications to some of the most underserved regions of the world -- from remote scientific outposts in the polar regions to countries devastated by natural or man-made disasters.

Under Dr. Clark's leadership, MCS has provided vital communications lifelines and telemedicine for humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts for the World Health Organization, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, African Development Bank, and NATO. In 2005, in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Clark and a team of Harris employees transported truckloads of equipment and worked with first responders over the next several weeks re-establish emergency communications in some of the most devastated areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast region. Prior to joining Harris in 1998, Dr. Clark's was involved in the development of manned and unmanned vehicles and systems used in deep-sea exploration.

"Andy has a long and distinguished record not only in science and technology, but in national and international leadership as well," said Jeremy Wensinger, group president, Harris Government Communications Systems. "We are pleased that others in the industry also recognize Andy's significant contributions and congratulate him on being selected as the recipient of this prestigious award."

Past recipients of the Compass Distinguished Achievement Award have included the former Chief of U.S. Naval Operations and Energy Secretary Admiral James Watkins; NOAA Administrator and Undersecretary of Commerce, Vice Admiral Conrad Lautenbacher; National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle; and U.S. Navy Commander Don Walsh, who piloted the deep-diving bathyscaphe Trieste to the bottom of the Challenger Deep -- a depth of more than seven miles.

Dr. Clark has received a number of industry awards during his career, including the Lockheed Martin Medal for Ocean Science and Technology. In 1998 he was appointed to the U.S. Ocean Research Advisory Panel by the U.S. Secretary of the Navy. He is a member of the Sea-Space Symposium, a select group of space and ocean explorers, and serves as a Trustee on the Boards of the Florida Institute of Technology and the Link Foundation.
