Groundbreaking Film Director David Lynch and Indie Pop Trio Au Revoir Simone Featured in the Next ''Upstairs at the Square'' on Thursday, January 11, at the Union Square Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced the next event in its new series, "Upstairs at the Square,” held at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (33 East 17th Street at Union Square). On Thursday, January 11th, at 7PM, David Lynch, groundbreaking filmmaker whose latest film is Inland Empire, and author of the new book, Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity, and Au Revoir Simone, Brooklyn-based all-female keyboard trio, whose latest album is Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation (The Bird of Music will be released in the spring), discuss and perform their work. Journalist Katherine Lanpher will again host the program. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Over the last four decades, David Lynch has created some of the best known and widely discussed screen works of our time, such films as The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive. In his new book, he provides a rare window into his working style and methods as an artist. In Catching the Big Fish, Lynch writes candidly about the tremendous creative benefits he has gained from his 32-year commitment to transcendental meditation. He describes the experience of "diving within” and "catching” ideas for television, films, photography and painting. Erika Forster, Annie Hart and Heather D’Angelo, members of the Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone (www.aurevoirsimone.com), harbor a love of synthesizers and vintage drum machines. Their debut album, Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation, expertly layers synthesizers, palpitating drum machine-induced disco beats, dreamy melodies, and ethereal, heartfelt and heart-rending vocals. The band’s influences could be likened to a dutifully mined musical thrift store. Alongside the racks and railings of sometimes mismatched but wholly treasured records occupied by Modest Mouse, Stereolab, Mountain Goats, Louis Prima and Pavement, the likes of the Beach Boys, Bjork, Broadcast, Belle & Sebastian, Bowie, the Bee Gees and Billie Holiday also take their place. In their own words, Au Revoir Simone makes "warm and organic electronic music with forthright female vocalists.” Katherine Lanpher is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press published her first book, Leap Days: Chronicle of a Midlife Move, in October. The next "Upstairs on the Square” will take place on Tuesday, February 6th, at 7PM, and features Travels in the Scriptorium author Paul Auster and musical guest Sophie Auster (www.sophieauster.com). In her debut album, Sophie Auster, she sings the translated poetry of Robert Desnos, Guillaume Apollinaire, Paul Eluard, Tristan Tzara, Philippe Soupault, and of course, a few works by her father, Paul Auster. Audio downloads of all five previous events are available on Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com/upstairs). They include: The series premiere on June 21 with Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert and singer-songwriter Jen Chapin, whose new album is Ready. The August edition with Coronado author Dennis Lehane and singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik, whose new album is White Limousine.
