eBay® Adds QR Code® Scanning and eBay Marketplace Listings to Popular RedLaser Barcode-Scanning iPhone® App

eBay (Nasdaq:EBAY), a leader in mobile commerce and the world’s largest online marketplace, today released a new version of its RedLaser iPhone application that will now include QR Code scanning capabilities. With the new update, RedLaser, the most popular barcode scanning app in the iTunes® store with over five million downloads on its own, will also populate product results with eBay Marketplaces and Half.com listings, making the popular comparison shopping app more powerful than ever before.

With QR, or "quick response”, Codes anyone – from brands to retailers to eBay sellers – can direct customers to a broad range of information. When scanning a QR Code, consumers can receive relevant information such as links to videos, product reviews or websites to get more product information, contact information for customer support, or calendar appointments for upcoming sporting events and concerts.

"As more brands, retailers and sellers leverage QR Codes to engage consumers with new and relevant content, we are providing our five million RedLaser users with more ways to scan. Our goal is to help consumers shop on their mobile phones and QR Codes provide customers with a new and fun way to learn more about products to assist in purchasing decisions,” said Steve Yankovich, eBay’s vice president of mobile and platform business solutions. "By offering consumers a host of reasons to use our apps, they are more likely to engage with eBay to purchase items from our Marketplace.”

Already popular in Asia and other parts of the world, more and more major U.S. brands, retailers and cable networks are using QR Codes to connect with consumers so they can instantly learn more about and find deals while shopping.

Additionally, eBay is updating RedLaser’s Software Development Kit (SDK) for its more than 100 third-party developers and select retailers including Coupons.com. The updated RedLaser SDK will allow RedLaser developers to create compelling mobile experiences by providing support for VIN barcode scanning; Code 128 for gift card scanning; and Code 39 for encoding uppercase letters A through Z, digits 0 through 9, and a handful of special characters that are great for asset tags to keep tabs on high-end merchandise in offices such as laptops. In doing so, eBay is promoting innovation in mobile commerce and becoming the de facto application for product search and scanning.

eBay’s acquisition of the RedLaser application built on the company’s momentum in mobile commerce. In 2010, eBay released an iPad™ application and four new iPhone apps: Selling, Classifieds, Fashion and StubHub. eBay Inc. is a global leader in mobile commerce with $1.5 billion in gross merchandise volume expected in 2010 through its mobile platforms. eBay’s mobile applications are available to millions of iPhone, BlackBerry® and Android™ users in more than 190 countries and eight languages. A mobile purchase is made every two seconds via eBay’s mobile applications.
