Dynasil's RMD Subsidiary Awarded $3.5 Million in Technology Development Grants by the U.S. Department of Energy
NEWTON, Mass., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Dynasil Corporation of America (NASDAQ: DYSL) today announced that its contract research subsidiary, RMD Inc., has received three Phase II grants totaling $3.5 million under the Department of Energy's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs.
"RMD's world-class research continues to be at the forefront of scintillation and laser optics & photonic technologies," said Peter Sulick, Dynasil's CEO and President. "These awards highlight RMD's pivotal role in applying material science to solve fundamental problems in nuclear physics and basic energy sciences and developing laser optics & photonics technologies for use in earth-science modeling to improve weather forecasting."
RMD received three Phase II grants totaling $3.5 million for the following:
- Ultra-Pure Scintillators - RMD is developing a new method to produce radio-pure scintillating bolometer crystals that will enable new, higher sensitivity nuclear physics experiments to be constructed and deployed. The techniques we are developing for low-radioactivity crystal manufacturing can also be applied to other materials to further innovations in nuclear physics studies.
- Laser Optics & Photonics - Using recent advances in laser optics & photonics, RMD is developing a lightweight holographic cloud particle imager, mounted on an unmanned aerial system. Our technology will facilitate a more thorough study of cloud evolution and composition, which will result in more accurate climate modeling. This will lead to more accurate weather forecasting, including the ability to better predict dangerous weather events.
- High Resolution Neutron Detectors - New high-intensity neutron sources are actively addressing numerous important and diverse areas of fundamental science. Due to the shortage of 3He, and the need for higher efficiency scintillators with enhanced spatial and temporal resolution, novel detectors with improved performance are required. RMD is developing these detectors which have substantial commercial potential for current and future neutron scattering facilities, and for neutron radiography.
"These Phase II research projects exemplify some of the world's most demanding research needs," said Kanai Shah, Ph.D., President of Dynasil's RMD subsidiary. "They capitalize on our technical and scientific capability in the development of scintillation materials and laser optics & photonics. RMD is proud to partner with the Department of Energy on these initiatives."
