DeVry New York Hosts HerWorld(R) Event To Introduce Girls to Science and Technology Careers
Many women working today can remember a time not that long ago when
careers in technology, science or business were simply not a viable
option for a young women entering the workforce.
Thankfully today, all that has changed. According to Department of Labor
statistics, career opportunities available in technical positions will
grow four times the national job growth rate. With so many jobs that
need to be filled, women have more career options than ever.
To encourage young women to consider careers in the challenging and
rewarding industries such as science, technology or business, DeVry
Institute of Technology will host a HerWorld®
Conference on Friday, March 14 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM at their Long
Island City campus at 30-20 Thomson Avenue.
Shanthi Konkoth, Vice President of Education for the ASA Institute, will
be a featured speaker at the event.
Students from the New York-area high schools will attend, including:
Jane Adams High School (Bronx), Information Technology High School (Long
Island City), Flushing High School (Queens), Belmont Prep High School
(Bronx), Adali E. Stevenson High School (Bronx) and Thomas Edison High
School (Queens).
Participants will also take part in a HerWorld®
workshop, which will discuss marketing and business careers, how to
develop a product and start your own business. A panel discussion is
also planned to answer students’ questions
about careers for women in business and technology. The highlight of the
day’s activities will be a hands-on Robotics
Workshop during which all attendees will build Wall-Hugging Mouse Robots.
According to Natalie Sommer, Professor of Electronics and Chair of
Computer Engineering Technology for DeVry Institute of Technology, "Providing
young women an opportunity to meet women professionals in science,
technology and business, to ask questions and gather information, is an
important first step in demonstrating how rewarding and fulfilling these
careers can be.” About DeVry University
