3M Precision Optics Signs Unaxis Optics as Vikuiti(TM) TIR Prism Licensee

The Vikuiti(TM) TIR Prism is an important component in the designof compact light engines employing Texas Instruments DLP(R) Technologyin both front and rear-screen projection displays. Operationally,light enters and travels through the prism to illuminate the DigitalMicromirror Device (DMD) that is at the heart of the DLP(R)technology. The image reflected off the DMD then passes through theTIR prism and is imaged onto the screen with the projection lens.

In addition to enabling a compact light engine, high brightnessuniformity and excellent contrast result from inclusion of this 3Mpatented technology, which is simple to implement and flexible in itsuse. The Vikuiti(TM) TIR Prism may also be used in multipleconfigurations. In one configuration, the various elements and prismare configured so that the light is reflected by total internalreflection prior to being imaged. In a 'reverse' Vikuiti(TM) TIR Prismdesign, the light is reflected by total internal reflection afterbeing imaged. The various configurations can be used to achievedifferent internal cabinet layouts of electronics and light enginedesigns.
