World Bank's Kim Hopes To Continue Egypt Aid Programs Despite Crisis

(RTTNews) - World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said Thursday that he hopes to continue with the bank's aid programs for Egypt, despite the recent political crisis following the ouster of the country's first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi.

"Our hope is that we'll be able to continue with our programs that provide essential services and essential support for some of the poorest people in Egypt," he said at a press conference in Chile.

"The only thing that I would say right now is that we really urge everyone to stay calm and to have a dialogue and to move as quickly as possible to having re-elections," Kim said. In an earlier statement on the situation in Egypt, Kim said "a calm period ahead will be critical for the economy to recover quickly from its recent downturn and for our support to be most effective in helping end poverty and boosting shared prosperity for all Egyptians."
