VENEZUELA: U.S. Considers Military Intervention In The Country, Says Trump
(RTTNews) - The United States government does not rule out a military action against Venezuela, US President Donald Trump said on Friday, calling the country's current situation "dangerous chaos."
The statement was made after Washington imposed sanctions to the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Latin American countries repudiated Trump's statement.
"We have many options for Venezuela, including military action," the U.S. president told reporters after a meeting with his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the United States ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. "The Venezuelan people are suffering and dying in the middle of the chaos."
Trump's remarks were rejected by some Latin American countries, who argued that a military intervention would not end the crisis in Venezuela.
"The crisis in Venezuela can not be solved by military action, internal or external," wrote the Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso on Twitter.
The Bolivian President, Evo Morales, also posted his position on Twitter: "We condemn the U.S.' armed interventionist hurry towards Venezuela, a country that seeks peace through a Constitutional dialogue and regional elections."
The Foreign Ministry of Colombia also released a statement rejecting "military actions and the use of force in the international system."
Meanwhile, the Mercosur economic bloc considered that the "only acceptable tools to promote democracy [in Venezuela] are dialogue and diplomacy."
