MEXICO: Country To Appeal To WTO Against U.S. Tariffs

(RTTNews) - Mexico intends to appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the United States decision to apply tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from its neighbor, said the Mexican government.

"In response to the measures that the United States has applied to Mexican steel and aluminum exports, our country announces that it will launch a WTO dispute settlement process," the Mexican government said in the statement.

Mexico, as well as other countries, was temporarily exempt from the import tariffs on steel and aluminum announced in March by the United States, but on Friday the White House finally decided to apply the barriers to the products from Mexico, the European Union, and Canada.

Mexico considers tariffs applied by the United States to violate the WTO safeguards agreement and the 1994's General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
