BRAZIL: Russia To Suspend Beef And Pork Imports Starting December
(RTTNews) - The Russian government said it would suspend imports of beef and pork meat from Brazil starting December 1, arguing that Brazilian producers are using the additive ractopamine to enhance animal growth. The substance is illegal in Russia.
Brazilian pork producers denied Russian allegations and said they would seek to clarify any misconception about the topic.
The Brazilian food company Minerva said that it would redirect the exports made to Russia to the units in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina "to nullify the effect of this suspension."
Russia represents around 6.6% of the company's export market.
Marfrig, other meat exporting company from Brazil, stated that the Russian decision would have minimal impact on its operations since the country absorbed only 3% of the company's exports from January to September.
