York County, Pa To Welcome More Than 2,000 First-Responders For The 2014 Can-Am Police-Fire Games
Olympic-style sporting competition to be held in York County next July
YORK, Pa., Aug. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In less than one year, more than 2,000 first-responders will travel to York County, PA to compete in the 2014 York Can-Am Police-Fire Games, happening July 13-20, 2014. This Olympic-style event is held every other year in different host cities throughout the United States and Canada.
The 2014 York Can-Am Police-Fire Games will mark the first time this prestigious event is held on the East Coast. York County is busy preparing for this eight-day event that is expected to generate an estimated economic impact of $4 million for the local community.
"Since its inception in 1977, the Can-Am Police-Fire Games has worked to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among and between emergency service personnel. Over the years, the Can-Am Police-Fire Games have evolved to allow all first-responders and their spouses to compete," said Chief Wes Kahley, Chief of Police, York City Police Department. "I am pleased that York is hosting the 2014 Can-Am Police-Fire Games, giving us the opportunity to showcase York County and raise funds to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation."
In addition to participation from municipal police and fire personnel, staff from more than 29 various local and national agencies can participate including:
- County Sheriff
- U.S. Park Service Police
- Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Military Police and Firefighters
- District Attorney's Investigators
More than 50 sporting events, including everything from industry specific events such as Toughest Firefighter Alive and Police Service Dog to traditional sports like hockey and softball will take place at approximately 30 venues across York County.
After expenses, a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia Chapter of the Make-A-Wish® Foundation. During the Games, Wish Kids will present medals to winning athletes, participate in Opening Ceremonies, volunteer at events and cheer on competitors.
