William R. Jacyk, M.D., FRCPC is recognized by Continental Who's Who
ELORA, Ontario, Sept. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- William R. Jacyk, M.D., FRCPC is recognized by Continental Who's Who as 2018 Professional of the Year for his excellence in the field of Medicine.
Dr. Jacyk is a career physician, educator and researcher who has worked in the field of Substance Use Disorders and concurrent Traumatic Stress for over 35 years. Early in his career he was a tenured faculty member, and served as an Associate Professor in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba Teaching Hospital and St. Boniface General Hospital. With his extensive experience in treating addictions and various concurrent conditions, Dr. Jacyk specialized in Substance Use Disorders in Health Professionals, Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers and First Responders, as well as in other safety-sensitive occupations. During his 27 years at the university, he was co-investigator of ground-breaking research into the epidemiology and treatment of Substance Use Disorders in seniors. Upon his retirement, he joined Homewood Health Centre in 1999 with the express purpose of developing a residential program specifically for seniors, and was subsequently instrumental in developing a comprehensive program for those who suffered concurrently from addiction as well as post-traumatic stress disorder.
In 2011, Dr. Jacyk joined the team at GreeneStone – initially as the Senior Clinical Consultant – to develop an evidence-based concurrent disorders program in a healing environment. In 2012 he was retained as the Medical Director until his resignation in early 2018 for medical reasons. In addition to his work in practice as well as in the classroom, Dr. Jacyk published research identifying the issues of alcohol and prescription drug abuse in the elderly community.
Dr. Jacyk attained his Medical degree from the University of Manitoba. Thereafter, he went on to complete his internship as well as his residency at Saint Boniface Hospital, where he served as chief medical resident. He was certified as a specialist in internal medicine and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. While he was on the faculty of Medicine in Manitoba, he was appointed the Coordinator of the Manitoba Medical Association's Physicians at Risk Program which assisted physicians suffering from substance use disorders and other mental health problems to seek treatment and restore their standing in their chosen profession. This appointment result in transition to a fulltime interest in addiction and associated mental health conditions.
Dr. Jacyk's community contributions included serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Center for Abuse Awareness. He has recently been named to Leading Physicians of the World and currently serves as the National Coordinator for Treatment and Education of addictions for NavCanada. He was a founding director, past president and remains an esteemed member of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine.
In recognition of his professional accolades, Dr. Jacyk was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal in 2002 related to his service in the area of trauma and abuse.
When not working, Dr. Jacyk enjoys playing golf, gardening and spending time with family. He dedicates this recognition to his 13 grandchildren.
