"We’re always striving to create typefaces that are not only beautiful, but also meet the varied needs of the huge community of creative professionals that rely on type to set their work apart,” said Tom Rickner, director of the Monotype Studio. "I’m truly proud of all of the designers, font engineers, language experts and partners that contributed to the Monotype Library this year. We’re looking forward to even more great designs in the year ahead.”
Each of the recent releases, as well as all of the designs released in 2018, are available to customers through Mosaic™, Monotype’s cloud-based font service that provides enterprises with an easy way to discover, manage, share and deploy fonts. Individual font licenses for these designs are also available through MyFonts.com.
Placard® Next: A Poster Typeface That’s Packed with Personality
With a reimagined version of the Placard typeface, a 1930s poster design, the Placard Next family takes all of the details and quirks of the original design and refines them for digital use. Designed by Malou Verlomme of the Monotype Studio, the typeface’s condensed design packs a typographical punch when used at large sizes. The family includes four widths, each with six weights ranging from thin hairlines to compact bold fonts, and works particularly well for posters or in editorial environments.
Amarone™: An Elegant Script Design That Embraces Its Rough Edges
The Amarone typeface is a sophisticated and elegant design featuring textures and rough edges – calling to mind visions of pirate treasure maps and explorers’ journals – which is also at home on packaging, posters and in editorial uses. Carl Crossgrove of the Monotype Studio designed the Amarone typeface, and purposely chose to retain the feel of handwritten calligraphy, but still offer the versatility of a digital design. Part of the design’s charm is the contrast Crossgrove has created, drawing an elegant set of calligraphic letters, but then leaving their rough edges still visible. He's also designed an extensive accompanying set of swash caps that allow the typeface to move from formal and elegant to dramatically expressive.
Malden™ Sans: A Cheeky Sans Serif Inspired by Hollywood’s History
Partly inspired by the world of film, Michele Patanè's Malden Sans typeface is a mischievous sans serif that was designed with the printed page in mind. Drawing on a bygone era of typography, this typeface takes on the devil-may-care attitude of the silver screen, embracing its imperfections rather than polishing them out. As a result, the design is resistant to rough handling – for example, adapting well to being printed on lower quality paper. It also works in digital environments, particularly in places where brands and designers need a typographic voice that contrasts the usual polished geometric sans serif. The typeface includes a normal and condensed range, which also gives designers some extra flexibility.
Elicit Script™: A Versatile Family That Can Be as Casual or Formal as the Occasion Demands
Laura Worthington of Laura Worthington Design and Jim Wasco of the Monotype Studio collaborated to create this hybrid script design that evokes the warmth of brush lettering and hand-drawn forms, mixed with a more formal script style. The Elicit Script typeface is designed as a true workhorse, spanning five weights and styles that range from buttoned-up high contrast designs to more relaxed monoline versions. Users can keep things straightforward, tidy and practical with the typeface’s simple caps, or add in swash caps if they need more exuberance and expression. Its generous spacing also means the design works well at smaller sizes – a rarity for script fonts.
