TSX Inches Higher, But BlackBerry Lags -- Canadian Commentary
(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks continued to rise Tuesday, although BlackBerry (BB.TO) struggled despite surprisingly decent earnings.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 23.11 points, or 15,292.96. Financials led the way yet again, but energy stocks were in the red.
BlackBerry (BB.TO) reported a strong performance from software and services. Adjusted to exclude items, BlackBerry earned 2 cents a share. Still, the stock fell 2.8 percent today.
BlackBerry will spend $100 million on a self-driving car research hub in Ottawa, which would create 600-plus jobs.
Former CEO David Baazov has ended his effort to purchase online gambling site Amaya (AYA.TO). The stock fell 1.8 percent.
CCL Industries Inc (CCLb.TO) said it would buy Innovia Group for around $1.13 billion. CCL shares jumped 19.7 percent.
The CRTC have approved the transfer of Manitoba Telecom Services' broadcasting licence to BCE Inc.
Crude oil futures were little changed Tuesday as traders braced for the latest U.S. oil inventories data.
The American Petroleum Institute is out with industry figures this afternoon, while the Energy Information Administration releases the government's data Wednesday morning.
WTI light sweet crude oil for February was up 17 cents at $53.23 a barrel.
