TriQuint Semiconductor Leads GPS Market Growth with 66% Share of SAW Filter Segment
TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq:TQNT), a leading RF front-end product
manufacturer and foundry services provider, today announced that its
wide portfolio of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters for GPS-enabled
products has made the company a leading supplier in the growing personal
navigation device (PND) market. With an estimated 66% GPS SAW filter
share, TriQuint Semiconductor leads in supplying low-cost,
high-performance devices for PNDs made by three of the top four(1) major
manufacturers that include Garmin, Tom-Tom, Mio Technology and Magellan.
"The growth of our key customers and their
long-term relationships with the TriQuint GPS portfolio has expanded our
position in this segment,” remarked TriQuint
Networks Vice President, Brian P. Balut. "When
researchers including Canalys reported this month(1) that shipments by
the top four exceeded 8.8 million units in the third quarter we
calculated a SAW filter market share of 66%.”
TriQuint’s market leadership is fueled by its
ability to offer manufacturers the widest GPS SAW filter portfolio
available. TriQuint products are used in all major PND market segments
including handset, automotive and industrial GPS applications. TriQuint
expects to sell more than 52 million GPS filters by the end of 2007.

TriQuint products play a vital role in enabling GPS signals received
from distant satellites to pinpoint a user’s
location. By the time GPS satellite transmissions reach the earth their
power levels are low relative to other wireless signals. TriQuint SAW
filters built into the Receive (Rx) signal chain weed out unwanted noise
from non-GPS sources, allowing desirable data to pass to the receiver.
Worldwide sales of personal navigation devices continue to exceed
expectations. ABI Research reported in November that it projected PND
sales to surpass 100 million units annually by 2011.
"TriQuint’s
existing GPS SAW filter portfolio and products now in development offer
manufacturers a wide range of solutions for a rapidly growing consumer
market,” Mr. Balut added. Adoption of so many
TriQuint SAW products by major PND manufacturers illustrates how
TriQuint is adding value by lowering overall system costs and enabling
improved system performance.
"TriQuint simplifies the design process by
tailoring solutions to customer needs. We are already looking ahead to
next-generation requirements for more highly-integrated modules that
draw from TriQuint’s wide technology
portfolio of gallium arsenide (GaAs) amplifiers and switches,”
said Mr. Balut.
