Telstra and Juniper Networks Deliver First Multi-Site Field Implementation of TM Forum’s IPsphere Framework

Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, and Australia’s leading service provider Telstra, today announced the first multi-site carrier field implementation of the TM Forum’s IPsphere framework. Built on a solution powered by Juniper Networks and partner Net One Systems, Telstra’s IPsphere field implementation in Sydney and Melbourne will be showcased as part of the TM Forum’s IPsphere worldwide field trial.

The TM Forum IPsphere Field Trial brings together leading service providers, hardware and software suppliers and systems integrators, to demonstrate a new level of business flexibility for advanced IP services -- with the assurance of a standards-based approach. The TM Forum’s IPsphere framework enables frictionless collaboration between all service providers in the value chain, including network service providers and content providers.

Combining Net One Systems’ integration and software customization capabilities and Juniper Networks routing and Session and Resource Control (SRC) portfolio, Telstra’s IPsphere field deployment features:

  • A unique multi-site deployment in Sydney and Melbourne, enabling Telstra to test and validate any IPsphere use case that supports the AAN initiative.
  • A validation of the Juniper Networks IPsphere-ready "S5” interface; based on the SRC portfolio leadership in delivering standards-based application-to-network interfaces, S5 enables direct interaction between the SRC and an IPsphere environment for advanced service control.
  • IPsphere Service Management System (SMS) software developed by Juniper Networks Open IP Service Creation Program (OSCP) partner, Net One Systems. Juniper’s unique OSCP program enabled rapid customization and integration of the Net One Systems software with Juniper Networks infrastructure.
  • IPsphere-ready control and data plane interfaces to other participating service providers to create a true global federation of providers.
  • A low-touch API driven model for content partnerships, which allows content providers to collaborate with IPsphere partners – and leverage premium bandwidth for competitive differentiation.

Telstra’s multi-site IPsphere field implementation will play an integral role in developing its Application Assured Network (AAN) initiative. Telstra’s AAN initiative defines a vision for a network capable of dynamically dimensioning itself to support any customer application requirement, such as bandwidth, delay, jitter and QoS. IPsphere capabilities complement and extend the AAN vision by enabling new ways of creating advanced services across partner boundaries.

"Developing a framework that will both enhance our current services portfolio and enable future offerings is a key priority for Telstra,” said Ian Stanley, National Manager, at Telstra. "The intelligent interaction between the network and service frameworks will be a critical success factor in the deployment of Application Assured Networking. Our multi-site IPsphere implementation enables us not only to test our own service delivery environment, but also to validate it with other service providers as part of the TM Forum’s worldwide IPsphere field trial.”

"Every service provider in the world is looking for a standardized way to abstract service components, compose services across partner boundaries, and control service lifecycle processes using software. It’s a recognized path to profit that raises revenues and manages costs,” said Tom Nolle, president and CEO, CIMI Corporation. "IPsphere is perhaps the standards-based approach that’s most fully developed, and this demonstration proves it. Profitable services in the future will depend on creating dynamic compositions of elements and dynamic relationships among providers worldwide. All of that was demonstrated here, and so this marks a very important step on the road to realizing the full potential of service-level technology.”

"Telstra’s innovative multi-site deployment demonstrates a unquestionable commitment to the IPsphere framework,” said Todd Shimizu, director of technical marketing, Juniper Networks. "The delivery of this working implementation underscores the importance of standards-based service frameworks to service providers’ evolving business models and Telstra has made a significant move forward here.”

The IPsphere worldwide field trial will be presented at the TM Forum Management World, 17-20 November in Orlando, Florida. The trial will be showcased under the IPsphere Focus Area within Forumville.

About the Open IP Service Creation Program

Formally launched in January 2007, the OSCP is an application development program for creating innovative IP service management functionality by leveraging the power of the Juniper Networks Session and Resource Control Portfolio. The OSCP is a component of Juniper’s overall J-Partner Open IP Development Program. The Open IP Development Program also includes the Partner Solution Development Platform (PSDP) that enables customers and partners to develop specialized applications on Juniper's carrier-class JUNOS® software.
