TCS Issued Its 30th Wireless Patent; Patent Allows Mobile Devices to C
Business Editors/Technology Editors
ANNAPOLIS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2005--TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ:TSYS), a global leader in wireless data technology, announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued USP 6,845,084 to TCS entitled, "ROUTING PROTOCOL SELECTION FOR AN AD HOC NETWORK." The patent is the second issued to the company in 2005, for a total of 30 patents issued, and more than 90 additional patent applications pending in the United States and jurisdictions throughout the world.
Ad hoc networking (sometimes referred to as mesh networking) has received growing interest because it takes advantage of the high and rising density of users with mobile devices, such as: cellular phones, wireless PDAs, and wireless laptops. Each mobile device acts like a mobile router, and passes the information from one device to another until it reaches its destination. TCS' ROUTING PROTOCOL SELECTION FOR AN AD HOC NETWORK patent addresses the fast-growing interest in and adoption of creating decentralized communication networks without costly infrastructure. As the term "ad hoc" is defined, it means to improvise (to make a solution from what is 'at-hand'). Ad hoc networks were shown interest first by the U.S. Department of Defense as a means to communicate on battlefields and at disaster sites, where no communications infrastructure is in place. A significant amount of research has been done within corporate and academic research labs to utilize the technology in consumer and enterprise applications.
Ad-hoc networks are first being rolled out in local and state public safety agencies as the technology allows users to communicate without costly infrastructure, and works even in emergency situations where the traditional wireline or wireless infrastructure may be inoperable or congested. The consulting group Accenture says that some of the first applications for ad-hoc networking include: emergency rescue operations, disaster response, large sporting and entertainment events, conferences in convention centers, major construction sites, and virtual classrooms.
"The depth of TCS' mature patent portfolio continues to expand," said Maurice B. Tose, Chairman, President and CEO of TeleCommunication Systems. "This patent demonstrates the breadth of our expertise across converging wireless data technologies. These new forms of communication represent the next leading edge technology that will be deployed to address the communication requirements of commercial, public safety and military users."
