Student Price Card (SPC) offers FREE trial membership for first time in 28-year history

Canada's leading student-based loyalty program focused on helping Canadian students save

TORONTO, June 23, 2020 /CNW/ - SPC (Student Price Card) has announced they are offering a free trial membership of their student-based loyalty program for the first time in their 28-year history. The move comes in response to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their GenZ and Millennial members, who have been hit hard by the resulting shut down particularly in the retail and food services industries.

In a recent study conducted by SPC, 60% of Millennials and 25% of GenZ responded that their employment situation had changed due to COVID-19.  "Many students are finding themselves out of work and without traditional summer job opportunities because of COVID," said Belinda Baugniet, VP of marketing and partnerships at SPC. "We've also seen, not surprisingly, that being at home has resulted in a significant impact on how students are spending and saving money."

Running from now until July 31, 2020 the SPC free trial will give students access to over 450 deals on a trial basis. Those who activate during the free trial, will also be offered a 20% discount off the normal $10 membership cost if they renew in August in anticipation of Back to School shopping needs. The free trial program aims to support students with deals on everyday items they need now, as well as set them up for savings all year long.

The study also looked at shifting spending habits as a result of COVID-19. Of those surveyed, 43 per cent say they are spending more on essential items, while 1 in 4 say with additional time on their hands, they are spending more on subscription-based entertainment and music services. Health and wellness continue to be a core focus with Millenials and GenZ with 65 per cent of students saying they are budgeting the same amount now for vitamins and supplements as they were before pandemic restrictions began. Over half are focused on working out at home and say they continue to spend the same on fresh and organic foods to stay healthy and happy.

"Since March, we've been focused on bringing more partners offering essentials to the SPC platform" adds Baugniet.  "It has been a great opportunity for us to prioritize the needs of our members and support their changing shopping habits by adding new partners and deals."

The SPC free trial is available to High School and Post-Secondary students from now until July 31st by downloading the SPC App or visiting www.spccard.ca/freetrial to activate.
