Spectra Energy Honors Exemplary Employee Achievement

HOUSTON, May 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Spectra Energy has selected the 2008 recipients of its prestigious Summit Award, an annual, company-wide program established to acknowledge extraordinary individual and team accomplishments by Spectra Energy employees and contractors.

Nominated by coworkers and selected by a committee of peers from different areas of the company, award recipients must demonstrate more than success or achievement; their efforts must epitomize Spectra Energy's "charter values." As such, honorees are recognized for their outstanding achievement and visionary thinking in the areas of Safety, Stewardship, Integrity, Respect for the Individual, Initiative, High Performance and Win-Win Relationships.

In keeping with the company's commitment to the communities it serves, Summit Award recipients are presented with a $5,000 check to be donated to non-profit organizations of their choosing.

This year's recipients: -- Union Gas employee Fernanda "Nanda" Claydon turned giving back to the community into a teambuilding venture that has swept the company. She started by organizing a team at the Union Gas Contact Center in Thunder Bay, Canada, to create fleece blankets and shawls to sell in support of United Way. Then, she turned to making pink shawls for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Her team made 50 pink shawls and donated them to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation in Thunder Bay. The success of the project led Claydon to launch "Pass the Pink Torch," encouraging other company offices to form teams to make pink shawls for their local cancer societies. The Pink Torch has since passed to offices in North Bay, Kingston, Brantford, Chatham, Calgary and Vancouver, and these offices continue to challenge other locations. Claydon will donate her $5,000 prize to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Foundation. -- Western Canada Transmission & Processing employees Ken Jones and John Murphy, both captains of the Taylor Volunteer Fire Department and members of the McMahon Plant Emergency Response Team in Taylor, British Columbia, have responded to emergencies for more than a decade. Last year, they ventured out on snowmobiles in sub-zero temperatures during a severe storm to save a stranded motorist and fellow co-worker who could not be reached by tow truck. Their selfless efforts and extensive knowledge of safety procedures resulted in everyone's safe return from an extremely hazardous, life-threatening situation. Jones and Murphy are donating their $5,000 prize to the City of Fort St. John, British Columbia. -- The Bangor Hydro AC Mitigation Team successfully completed commercial negotiations, design, installation and testing of AC mitigation equipment along 60 miles of the company's Maritimes & Northeast existing mainline. Safety requirements for both company personnel and local residents were paramount. Although there was no pre-existing protocol, the team created a solution, developed procedures and executed construction and testing without error. The team is donating its $5,000 prize to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital of Maine Medical Center. Team members: Art Birx, Brendan Boyce, James Bryant, Kevin Donahue, Chris Drummey, Wesley Ellington, Ray Humphreys, David Hanbury, Dennis Lavallee, Steve Leary, Colonel MacLeod, Gus McLachlan, Stephanie More, Tim O'Brien, Frank Perry, Wayne Robertson, Don Thompson and James White. -- The Northeast Gateway Project Team successfully completed the Northeast Gateway Lateral, a 16-mile sub-sea pipeline off the coast of Massachusetts that connects Excelerate Energy's deepwater liquefied natural gas (LNG) port to the company's Algonquin system and growing Northeast markets. From inception to completion, the team worked closely with external and internal stakeholders to ensure they completed their project safely, on time, under budget and in an environmentally sound manner. Their efforts to protect marine life during construction, involving collaboration with numerous agencies and institutions, are featured on the cover of Spectra Energy's 2007 annual report. The Northeast Gateway Project team is donating its $5,000 prize to the Nancamp Scholarship Fund. Team members: Tina Faraca, Pat Hester, Gus McLachlan, Dave Neal and Doreen Wrick. -- The Union Gas Incentive Regulation Team achieved regulatory approval on a comprehensive incentive regulation framework under which Union Gas will operate through 2012. The team spent two years planning and 16 months in the regulatory process to reach this settlement. Incentive regulation provides certainty around the framework by which distribution rates will be calculated over the next five years, which supports longer-term decisions around capital investments in the province and creates significant shareholder value. The Union Gas Incentive Regulation Team has chosen to split its $5,000 prize between The Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and the Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village.
