Sagem Communication Selects Freescale's RF Subsystem for EDGE Mobile Phones; World's First SAGEM EDGE Handsets Incorporate DigRF - Boosting Clarity of Voice Calls

Cutting-edge enhanced multimedia, clear call reception, high voice quality and fewer dropped calls are critical decisionfactors for consumers when purchasing a mobile phone. The FreescaleSemiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) Enhanced Data rate for GSMEvolution (EDGE) RF (Radio Frequency) subsystem delivers on thesedemands for the new models of SAGEM EDGE mobile phones.

Sagem Communication has chosen to partner with Freescale tointegrate EDGE RF subsystems into its next-generation family ofhandsets to meet consumers' demand for performance and style. EDGEtechnology allows users to access high-resolution Internet and e-mailapplications while minimizing the drain on the batteries of mobilephones.

"Mobile phones are becoming a part of personal style andexpression," said Thierry Buffenoir, deputy CEO of SagemCommunication. "Freescale's RF subsystem allowed us to design powerfuland fashionable EDGE handsets."

Freescale's EDGE solution is compliant with the DigRF industrystandard, allowing customers to easily incorporate thisindustry-leading subsystem into any phone design. The Freescalesolution taps the handset market for EDGE, and according to IDC'sNovember 2005 forecast, EDGE handsets will increase from 51 millionunits in 2005 to over 217 million in 2009.

"In addition to a high level of integration, our EDGE solutionprovides a perfect balance between signal purity and powerconsumption," said Franz Fink, senior vice president and generalmanager of Freescale's Wireless & Mobile Systems Group. "This EDGEsolution with DigRF interface enables manufacturers to providehigh-yielding EDGE handsets that offer superb voice quality and talktime."

Freescale's EDGE RF subsystem

The RFX275-20 EDGE RF subsystem consists of the MMM6000transceiver, which integrates the analog baseband and contains a DigRFinterface and MMM6027 power amplifier that includes the antenna switchand most passive components. The highly integrated subsystem delivers:

-- Reliable quality for clear reception, low noise and fewer dropped calls

-- High integration of components

-- Compliance with industry-standard DigRF interface for ease of design

-- Auto-calibration feature for improved handset yields in manufacturing

About DigRF

The DigRF digital interface standard defines an efficient physicalinterconnection between baseband and RF integrated circuits fordigital cellular terminals. It ensures that ICs (Integrated Circuits)complying with the standard can, when correctly configured, alwayscommunicate with each other, leading to an open market in digitalterminal components. The standard places as few constraints on theinternal architectures of the ICs themselves as possible to allowsuppliers space for competition based on innovation and efficientdesign. The standard currently addresses 2.5G GSM (E-GPRS to slotclass 12); work is in progress on a new version of the standardcovering 3G. It has been defined and published by the DigitalInterface Working Group. For more information see www.digrf.com

About EDGE

EDGE is an enhancement of previous networks to triple the dataspeeds for multimedia and Internet access. Higher data rates are idealfor feature phones, smart phones, PDAs, PC cards and wireless modules.
