Reports: BMW In Talks To Develop Autonomous Cars - Quick Facts

(RTTNews) - As per a Bloomberg report, BMW (BMW.L, BAMXF.PK, BAMXY.PK), Mobileye, and chip maker Intel Corp. are in talks regarding a possible partnership on autonomous cars. Mobileye N.V. is the global leader in the development of computer vision and machine learning, data analysis, localization and mapping for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and autonomous driving.

The technology business Mobileye develops optical sensor systems, which recognize - in real time - details of the car's surroundings that are used to continually improve what are known as surroundings maps. Based on a large number of vehicles equipped with this technology highly precise and up-to-date information will be generated. Precise surroundings maps will serve as the foundation for autonomous driving.

In May, Mobileye (MBLY) and STMicroelectronics (STM) announced the two companies are co-developing the next (5th) generation of Mobileye's SoC, the EyeQ 5, to act as the central computer performing sensor fusion for Fully Autonomous Driving vehicles starting in 2020. EyeQ5 will be delivered to carmakers and Tier1s along with a full suite of hardware accelerated algorithms and applications that are required for autonomous driving.

In January 2016, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Volkswagen entered into a strategic partnership with Mobileye, exclusively for Europe, to effectively manage the digital transformation of the automotive industry and develop intelligent surroundings monitoring technologies. The camera-based real-time image processing technology which - in conjunction with highly precise digitalized maps - is the key to autonomous driving. In February 2016, Mobileye signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nissan aimed to integrate Mobileye's new Road Experience Management technology into Nissan's fleets.
