RadiSys Announces New Speech Capabilities for Convedia Media Server Family

RadiSys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), the leading independent provider of open, standards-based media server platforms and advanced embedded solutions, today announced that its market-leading Convedia® media server family now supports automatic speech recognition (ASR), or converting human speech to computer data, and text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities in multiple languages for IP contact center application developers and service providers. The company’s integration of a standards-based Media Resource Control Protocol (MRCP) with leading speech servers results in better resource utilization and economics, less equipment to procure and manage in large deployments, and improved scalability. Commenting on the announcement, Stéphane Téral, principal analyst for Infonetics Research, Inc., said, "Speech capabilities are increasingly prevalent in many Voice over IP (VoIP), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and mobile applications. Adding support for ASR and TTS to RadiSys Convedia media servers brings significant benefits to application vendors. By reducing their development and deployment costs, vendors can accelerate the introduction of new services and competitively differentiate their products in next-generation IP contact centers.” David Smith, General Manager of the Media Service Business Unit at RadiSys, explained, "Our new ASR and TTS capabilities improve the economics and scalability of speech application deployments and will continue to expand our business with IP contact center application development partners, as well as with our hosted call center service provider customers.” Benefits of Integrating Convedia Media Servers and Speech Servers Speech servers are specifically designed to deliver ASR and TTS capabilities. A typical VoIP application, however, requires many additional forms of media processing such as audio and video media streaming, media record and playback, tone detection, and multimedia conference mixing. Relying solely on speech server platforms to control all these media processing functions for a typical IP communications application is expensive, while delivering less-than-optimum scalability for large deployments. With the introduction of ASR and TTS support, Convedia media servers can now be used in conjunction with speech servers to deliver a more cost-effective and scalable deployment model. Previously, Convedia media servers could process Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) commands and VoiceXML scripts to apply media processing against Real Time Protocol (RTP) media streams in a VoIP or IMS architecture. Today, an ASR or TTS request written in the VoiceXML script is forwarded using a standards-based Media Resource Control Protocol (MRCP) interface to an adjunct speech server. The net result is that speech servers now can focus exclusively on ASR and TTS processing, while all other media processing is done cost-efficiently within the Convedia media server. This creates an improved service delivery architecture. An additional benefit is that application vendors need only develop one media processing interface to the media server, rather than two interfaces to separate media server and speech server technology platforms. Availability ASR and TTS support in multiple languages based on an MRCP integration with leading third-party speech servers is available immediately on the RadiSys Convedia media server family of products.
