Pennsylvania State Education Official Visits Chambersburg's Coyle Free Library

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa., April 18, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Deputy Secretary Glenn Miller visited the Coyle Free Library to celebrate Pennsylvania'sOne Book, Every Young Child Month, recognize National Library Week, and receive an update on the library's renovation project from staff.

Miller, who is the deputy secretary for commonwealth libraries, serves as the state librarian.

During the visit, Miller read the book, Daniel Finds a Poem, to a group of preschool age children. The book is the 2017 selection for the commonwealth's One Book, Every Young Child celebration, which is a literacy initiative to highlight the importance of early literacy development in children ages 3 to 6. It is a collaboration between PDE's Office of Commonwealth Libraries (OCL) and the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL).

"Pennsylvania's public libraries are valuable community resources," Miller said. "Libraries offer programs from One Book to financial literacy classes, and bringing children to their local library early on can spur a lifelong interest in reading, and help introduce children to the many resources a library can offer them as they grown up."

During the visit, Miller also met with library staff to discuss the progress on the library's renovation project and to share with them the Wolf Administration's goal of promoting libraries and increasing the number of annual visits to libraries around the state.

Governor Tom Wolf's Administration recently announced that Coyle was one of 27 libraries across Pennsylvania to be awarded a Keystone grant. Coyle is using the grant to partially fund the renovation project that will help the library serve the Chambersburg community.
