Job Total at its Highest Level since October 2008

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Both private and public sector jobs were up in August, according to employment statistics released today by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry. Private sector jobs were up 9,200 to 5,767,700 due to gains in both goods-producing and private service-providing industries.

Pennsylvania's August total jobs were at their highest level since October 2008, increasing by 11,300 to a total of 5,767,700. Both private and public sector jobs were up with increases in eight of the 11 supersectors, the primary categories in which jobs are classified.

"Pennsylvania has now added 141,300 private-sector jobs since the beginning of the Corbett Administration in 2011," Julia Hearthway, secretary of the Department of Labor & Industry said.

The state's unemployment rate ticked up two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.7 percent in August.

Over the year, the unemployment rate was down four-tenths of a percentage point, while the labor force was up 19,000, the amount of people working was up 45,000 and unemployment was down 26,000.

"The overall trends for the state's economy are positive and strong," said Hearthway.
